The update for the Z170 Extreme4 seems to have been taken down, likely due to an issue discovered by Tech Support. I am sure there will be a new, problem free update available soon.

I am afraid I have no idea. There could be any number of reasons to take down an update but if the BIOS is functioning for you then in all likelihood the issue was something minor or specific to a certain configuration.

For example a BIOS may cause issues with a particular brand and model of RAM but be completely fine on any other config.

ASRock now released 2.80 for Extreme4 and it wont work at all!. Well done...
I updated to 2.80 and after I pressed Enter to Reboot. Now the ASRock Logo shows up and the PC reboots again. Than it only shows a black screen. I waited over 10 minutes, but nothing.
The mainboard showed 00 and later 55. I turned off and was unable to turn on again. I had to unplug from energy, waited some more minutes and was able to start the PC again, but it wont fix the problem. Still ends in black screen. I am also unable to enter UEFI.

Luckily I was able to get back my PC to life with the UEFI switch which turns the UEFI back to 1.60.
So my recommendation: DO NOT UPDATE!
Version 2.60 and 2.70 was fine. I had no issues. Sadly these updates are gone, so I go back to 2.40.

I have had that happen to me before and it is usually corrected by clearing CMOS and removing the battery and power for a few hours. I am not sure why it happens but I suspect it has something to do with settings not being properly cleared when the flash is complete. It happened to me changing from BIOS version 1.50 on my H170 Combo to 1.60 but did not happen from 1.40 to 1.50 or from 1.60 to 1.80. My thinking is that it occurs when settings are added, removed or rearranged in the UEFI from one update to the next, when the system does not clear the previous settings completely it causes a corrupt data set that prevents post. At least that is my current theory.

Thanks for posting.

Thank you for the hint.
I already tried the CMOS clear button on the back, but didn't work.
No I changed the jumper for the clear CMOS function. Is it normal that the PC wont turn on by changing that?
Anyway, after putting it back to the normal position, PC turned on again and I got the question to start UEFI or continue, so CMOS was cleared I guess.

Now the PC finally starts with 2.80.
Man, this was many painful, shocking moments for the day and I got a big headache now...
This really shouldn't happen on an update and I never had a problem like that with UEFI updates on my old Z77 Extreme4.

EDIT: Okay... no, I have to relevate me post a little. I still can't give any recommendation. After I wanted enter UEFI again, I ran into the same problem, monitor stays black.
So I cleared CMOS, started again, set my UEFI settings... At least I can normally restart and shut down the PC. But I am not allowed ever to start UEFI again... Hopefully I don't need until the next version comes out.

Thanks for the detailed description of your problem. If you could send a support ticket directly to ASRock http://www.asrock.com/support/index.asp" rel="nofollow - here  I am sure they will be more than happy to try and assist you. Include your system specifications and a description of the behavior of the system after you updated the BIOS.

According to some sources on the web, it seems like Intel wants to ban non-k oc. Try Googling for more info.

exactly. But my case looks ver lonely here Cry

This is how it behaves: I enter UEFI, Update with Instant Flash. PC reboots -> black screen
turn PC off, clear CMOS, reboot PC, at screen for F1 for continue, F2 for UEFI, I enter UEFI, make my settings, save changes and boot -> works
turning PC off and on -> works
BUT, if I only need to reboot my PC (e.g. updates) -> black screen.
Or if I want to enter UEFI AGAIN -> black screen.
Than I always need to clear CMOS to get it back work.

I also had trouble to downgrade. When I entered UEFI and started Instant Flash, UEFI got frozen. Always!
The only way I found was, clearing CMOS again, boot PC, pressing like an idiot F6 for Instant Flash, than question about F1 and F2 was shown, pressed F2 but still pressed F6 like an idiot.
Finally the downgrade started. After being on 2.40 everything works normal and fast. I can restart PC, I can enter UEFI whenever I want. No problems.

I already resported ASRock Tech support, but the UEFI team is celebrating chinese new year now.

This ^^ exact same thing has happened to me here on a Gigabyte board. Their Techs, after 30mins on the phone, declared it is defective.

Morku, return it to the Seller or RMA back to ASRock. Whichever is more convenient.

Are you sure? The whole mainboard!? But why are lower UEFI version working fine?
And how I work on PC without replacement or I will get simultaneously replacement? And will I get a new "Hardware ID" with a new mainboard and need to reinstall windows? I will go crazy T_T

I will wait for an e-mail from ASRock or stay on 2.40 forever. I got really tired about computer technics from china. It's always somehow broken...

this happened to me too when I enabled the XMP profile on my Ram.

Do you have this behaviour also with everything @ default?

I solved it raising the VCCIO and the VCCSA by 0.05V. Now it's ok even if I reboot. ;)

(but consider that I'm not using the last bios)

Seems like the UEFI developer team got stuck in "chinese new year". I still didn't get any answer about my problem and they still share the buggy 2.80 and 2.90 on their page (Z170 Extreme4).

Thats very sad, because it will heavily influence my choice about the next brand in future.
At least, version 2.40 works very well here, but hey guys, remember that time, when BIOS was very plain and stable and Windows buggy? How time is changing...

I am sorry but I have to disagree, the problems started when access to the UEFI was granted to the OS Tongue

The UEFI is accessed and altered by the OS these days so buggy windows can often result in buggy BIOS, just sayin.

Hi,

I've got also the Z170 Extreme4 (EFI/BIOS 2.90) here and seems to be have the same issues. For me it's randomly crashing in Windows 10 after 5-20 minutes with every time a different failure code in windows.

For troubleshooting, I've reinstalled windows, switched from SSD to HDD, unplugged different hardware from USB and PCIe without success.

Then I've made a downgrade to EFI/BIOS 2.40 and the problems are gone. There must be some issue with the newer versions and this specific board.
I really hope someone from the devs will look here and into this issue.

I would like to report that UEFI 3.20 für ASRock Z170 Extreme4 finally fixed my problem which occured in 2.80 and 2.90.
No more black screen. Booting works, rebooting works, always enetering UEFI works very well now.
