Hello, I have Asrock z490m-pro4 main board where it has or 4pin ATX12v2 and 8pin ATX12v1 CPU power slots. My PSU has 300w and have only 4pin cpu socket, (the psu is out of the box included in my mAtx slim case.) I have facing difficulties to find a higher psu to fit for that slim case. According to my power calculation 300w is enough. -Can i use this configuration only 4pin cpu socket via "ATX12v2" (8pin is not connected) ? -What if i can use one of the free mulex output with using an adapter cable/socket to create another 4pin cpu socket and combine them together with orginal 4pin from PSU socket to create a new 8 PIN one and plug into 8pin slot of the motherboard "ATX12v1" ? Can it be doable ? System: No Graphics card. CPU i7-10700 65w (I am not planning any overclock) 16GB Corsair dd4 8x2 16MB 2 PCIE Quad eth card Intel (max 20watt) 1 PCIE Double sfp card Intel x520-da2 (max 13watt) M2 500GB Samsung EVO OS: FreeBSD Linux. There is a reason for the power connector configuration. Simply put the board needs all of them. Why spend the money for a good board and cheap out on the PS. I am building a PC with AsRock Intel H570 Steel Legend + i7-11700 + standard DDR4-3200 RAM modules No planning to overclock RAM or CPU o GPU GPU planned initially a old Geforce 1060 from the today PC The PSU designed for this build is Corsair RM750x which is without outlet for the second ATX12V, but if necessary I may think to return it and buy a new one. Anyway for the planning needs, for the level of GPU I am about to buy in the future, it's very powerful, it may be enough 550-600W... In AMD MoBo threads of this forum some users recommends to connect both ATX12V 8+4 plugs for stability (to distribute the resource and absortion) of the Power circuits on the MB, is valid also for INTEL MBs? On the PDF guide of the MoBo it only speaks "... Connecting an ATX 12V 4-pin cable to ATX12V2 is optional. *For advanced overclocking we suggest using this connector together with ATX12V1..." It does not say anything else or more detailed: thank you for every reply! |

The extra connector allows for higher power draw by the board with lower heat. If you plan to overclock (and over volt) then you will ideally want to use both as it will provide more, more stable power to the system and help with stabilizing higher overclocks. If you do not plan to overclock a single 8 pin works just fine. For an i7 I do not recommend using just a 4 pin however. That would be fine for an i3 or lower but the i7 will likely push a single 4 pin to it's limits and cause excessive heat buildup. -------------

I would not use ONLY 4 pin but the ATX12V1 fully connected which is 8pin (not only 4pin) The CPU will be i7-11700K (just got with a better price than 11700 standard) which has higher TDP 125W than the 65W of normal 11700 Does it still remain necessary using ATX12V2 too? Thanks again |
