Subject: Intel 11th Gen Rocket Lake Support on Z490

Has anyone gotten rocket lake cpus working on "supported" Z490 boards?

I have two Z490 Phantom Gaming ITX/TB3 boards (one with an i9 10850k and another with an i3 10100f). I wanted to upgrade my i3 processor to the recently released i5 11400 cpu. BIOS version P1.60 is listed as supporting Intel 11th gen, so I installed that on both boards. The boards both work fine with the 10th gen chips on this bios. However, the i5 11400 I bought won't post in either of them (debugging POST LED stuck on CPU and DRAM).

Thinking it might have been a defective cpu, I got a replacement 11400. Same issue on both boards. So I'm guessing the bios isn't ready (despite what is advertised). Does ASRock plan to release a new BIOS anytime soon?

I also sent in a tech support ticket last week but haven't heard back.

Hi SnootyJim92,

Thank you for your post.

We tested Z490 Phantom Gaming ITX/TB3 (P1.60) with i5 11400 and the system can boot up after updating BIOS P1.60.

So we expect your motherboard should be able to post with Rocket lake CPU after updating BIOS.

Please follow the below suggestion to verify your system.
1. Flash the BIOS P1.60 via Instant flash with your comet lake
2. Install one stick RAM on each slot by turns to check if the problem relates to a specific RAM stick or slot.
3. If possible, please use other CPUs and RAM to cross-test to check if the problem relates to the compatibility of the memory and CPU

Hi ASROCK TSD,

Thanks a lot for getting back to me!

I tried your suggestion using just one ram stick and unfortunately it didn't work out for me.

To be more specific, I tried it in both of my Z490 Phantom Gaming ITX/TB3 with BIOS P1.60 with 4 different ram sticks, one at a time, trying each slot individually (so that's 16 combinations). It still doesn't POST with the 11400, but it works fine with both of my comet lake cpus. I don't have another 11th gen cpu on hand to try (or another board to validate if the 11400 itself works); however, it is the second 11400 I've received from Amazon since rocket lake launched.

Do you happen to have any other suggestions or ideas?

I still have until May 22 to return my 11400 for a refund, so I'll probably wait until then before I give up on 11th gen on my z490 board.

Thanks again!

Hi SnootyJim92,

Thank you so much for your test and reply.

Please contact your MB distributor or dealer to do the RMA procedure for both of your motherboards.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continuous support.

All the best,
ASRock TSD

Thanks for getting back to me.

I'm well past the RMA deadline unfortunately, and I do use these computers everyday. After thinking about my options, and considering the recent discounts on comet lake CPUs, I decided to return my 11400 for a refund and buy a 10600k instead. Been working great with the 10600k since.

Thanks again.

I have exactly the same issue, same motherboard, same cpu, same issue.
I also tested the i5 11400 on ASUS PRIME Z490 A motherboard(with latest BIOS) and it works perfectly. I think the issue is the BIOS, ASROCK needs to working on the BIOS to solve the issue.

I have the same issue, and have tried the following:
Intel i7-11700K in ASRock Z490 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3
--- Does not boot, CPU and Memory lights lit up on daughter board
Intel i7-10700 in ASRock Z490 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3
--- Boots normally. BIOS version 1.2.
Updated BIOS to version 1.6 from ASRock website.
---   Boots normally with Intel i7-10700. Shows BIOS version 1.6
Intel i7-11700K in ASRock Z490 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3, with same RAM.
--- Does not boot, CPU and Memory lights lit up on daughter board
Tested Intel i7-11700K in Gigabyte B560M DS3H-AC
--- Boots normally.
Intel i7-11700K in ASRock Z490 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3, with same RAM.
--- Does not boot, CPU and Memory lights lit up on daughter board
Intel i9-11900K in ASRock Z490 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3, with same RAM.
--- Does not boot, CPU and Memory lights lit up on daughter board
Tested Intel i9-11900K in Gigabyte B560M DS3H-AC
--- Boots normally.

So either the BIOS version 1.6 is not compatible with 11th Gen Intel CPUs, the BIOS version 1.6 is not compatible with Unlocked 11th Gen intel CPUs, or the motherboard is faulty.
