tl/dr: AB350 Pro4 USB 3.0 ports stopped working properly, I never updated BIOS, should I try updating BIOS for a fix?
AB350 Pro4 USB 3.0 stopped working properly and I will try to give as much details as possible next After a restart yesterday I noticed my 1TB USB 3.0 External Drive stopped being recognized by windows10 then I tested the same external drive on usb 2.0 ports and it worked. I tried again on 3.0 ports, the LED on external drive turns blue indicating 3.0 port but win10 won't recognize it. Then I started testing doing more tests.
AB350 Pro4 has:
- 2x USB 2.0 Ports (USB12)
- 2x USB 3.0 Ports (USB3_34)
- 2x USB 3.0 Ports (USB3_12)
- 1 x USB 3.0 Port (USB31_TA_1)
- 1x USB 3.0 Type-C Port (USB31_TC_1)
Tests I made:
- If I plug my 1TB usb 3.0 external drive on either usb 2.0, the USB12, it's LED turns on white and it works normally.
- If I plug 1TB USB 3.0 external drive on: either USB3_34 or either USB3_12, it's LED turns white when it should be blue. No win10 device connect or disconnect sounds.
- If I plug 1TB USB 3.0 external drive on USB31_TA_1, it's LED turns blue, indicating usb3.0, but win10 don't recognize it. Win10 do device connect and device disconnect sound constantly.
- If I plug a small 8GB usb pen drive, not usb3.0, on either USB12 it works normally like 1TB USB 3.0 external drive
- If I put 8GB pen drive, not usb3.0, on: either USB3_34, either USB3_12, led on it blinks a little, and turn off. No win10 connect or disconnect sounds.
- If I plug a small 8GB usb pen drive, not usb3.0, on the USB31_TA_1, it works normally, unlike the 1TB USB 3.0 external drive
- If I plug android smartphone with usb cable on either USB12, it charges the phone and android prompts file transfer options.
- If I plug android smartphone with usb cable on either USB3_34 or either USB3_12, it only charges the phone, no data transfer prompts from android.
- If I plug android smartphone with usb cable on USB31_TA_1, it charges the phone and android prompts file transfer options.
The issues about USB 3.0 with my AB350 Pro4 are not new. When this board was new if I did any big file transfer with any usb 3.0 all the usb drivers would suddenly stop working during the process and I'd have to reboot computer a few times hoping win10 would fix the reinstall the drivers. This was fixed at a later date by updating chipset drivers.
Currently I tried fixing my drivers, reinstalled and installed drivers from official motherboard page I did not have any luck so far my ports are still not working properly.
I have never updated my BIOS since the page discourages you a lot from doing it.
My current system info is:
UEFI Version: -AB350 Pro4 P4.60 CPU Family: -Ryzen 5 CPU Model: -1600 CPU Core: -Summit Ridge Memory: -2x 4GB (DDR4-2666) GPU: -GTX 1050 Ti OS Edition: -Windows 10 Pro OS Version: -21H1 OS Build: -19043.1348
Questions: 1. Is it safe to update BIOS to the latest available? 2. Is there any way to test if the d+/d- of ports are dead? 3. Why there is a "P" in the UEFI version but on BIOS update download pages versions are listed without the "P" what is the different? is P4.60 referring to BIOS update 4.60? 4. Should I update my BIOS directly to the last one skipping previously updates? 5. If still not working after BIOS updates, what I should do next?
