I have had a system buitl from scratch:
-Asrock 990FX extreme3 motherboard
-AMD FX9590
-Seagate SSHD 1TB
-Pioneer Blu Ray
-Radeon R7 260x Graphic card
-16 (2x8)  GB RAM -corsair vengeance ddr3 1600MHz
- PSU INTEGRATOR 850w

The UEFI version is 990FX Extreme3 P1.90

The problem is that I can not install the support drivers or  Windows because it will not boot from the optical drive.

I have changed the SATA Mode to IDE in the Storage config as per instructions, I have selected the SATA optical driver as Boot option 1 and on reboot when I press F11 I select SATA optical drive.

Then the screen goes black with a - at the top left corner and nothing happens.

I also created a bootable USB Flash drive and selected it as boot option 1 etc.  with exactly the same result.

Also, If I don't press either F2 or F11 nothing seems to happen, just the same black screen with the -

Everytime I press F11 The build in UEFI shell comes as the first booting option even though I have changed before.  In that list there are other UEFI options.  What ever I choose the result is always the same black screem with the - at the top left corner.

I have also tried reseting the bios with the CMOS jumper and removing the battery.

Any help will be apreciated

Where do you see setting the SATA mode to IDE in what instructions? That is likely the problem.

There is no reason to use IDE mode today whatsoever. Set the SATA mode to AHCI and try again.

Do you hear the optical drive starting to read the disk? It seems to be working since you have an entry for it in the boot order.

If you still have problems, let us know.

Thank you for your quick answer @parsec  Smile

I read about the IDE mode in the motherboard's installation guide. I have changed the SATA mode to AHCI with the same result I'm afraid.

I don't hear the optical drive starting to read the disk.  I just see the light briefly on, same as with the hard drive. I will get new SATA cables later on today as I read somewhere that they could be an issue too.

I have just tried new SATA cables and still no joy.  Cry

I bought a test speaker (as my case doesn't have one) and it doesn't beep when it is supposed to be doing the POST. I only does a short beep when I press F2 to enter the UEFI.  When I save and exit total silence and black screen again.

Is this motherboard defective?

It turns out that the motherboard was defective.

I returned it to the shop and got a new one.

All is up and running now! Tongue
