Subject: ASRock Z690 PG Velocit£ PL1 & PL2 default settings

I have recently assembled a new PC with a Z690 PG Velocit?, 32GB DDR5 RAM, an Intel i9-12900F with a Noctua NH-U12A air cooler.

After installing all the MB drivers I run Cinebench 23 to check if everything run fine under a heavy load. With my surprise I scored more than 26K with high CPU temperatures (more than 90°C). Something not normal for a non-K CPU.

I then entered the bios and I noticed that in the OC Tweaker/CPU Configuration screen the PL1 and PL2 values where both at 4.096, that is with *no limits*, while the CPU Core Current limit was pretty high at 280.

If I'm not wrong, these are values for OC'ed and well cooled CPU. Is this normal?

Cheers

The bios is the last version, 6.02 (2022/01/28). While waiting for an answer by the Tech Support, I have lowered those values to those of the previous motherboard (an ASRock Steel Legend Z690 DDR4).

Hi Gatt59,

Thank you for your post.

Z690 PG Velocita has the default unlimited PL1 and PL2 settings to maximize CPU performance.

But with these settings, they require a very excellent cooler such as 360mm water cooling to dissipate the CPU heat.

According to your cooler, you can slightly lower the PL1 to around 200 or even a lower value to reduce the power consumption and cool down the processor when doing the long-term heavy load.

All the best

Thank you very much for your kind reply. I'll set Pl1 at 200 and let you know how it works.

Best regards,
Federico

OK, I tested the CPU with PL1=200 and, under heavy load, the temperature never went above 79°C with an average around 75°.

With (good) air cooling, I think that this - for normal use - can be considered quite good.

Thanks for the help.
