Z690 Steel Legend - New motherboard with "Intel I9-12900K" CPU installed - BIOS/UEFI and WIN10 reporting the wrong CPU.
Reporting CPU as "Celeron(r) G6900." BIOS/UEFI flashed ok to Z690 Steel Legend 4.01 - system operating but... what going on here?

I would immediately return that CPU. It's a fairly common return scam, people buy both a high end and a budget CPU of the same socket type then delid them both and return the cheap one with the heat-spreader (and all the screen printed info) of the expensive one. It isn't as easy to trick boards into thinking one CPU is a different one these days, not since the CPU's themselves began shipping with thier own locked firmware identifiers.
Odds are, if it's reporting as a Celeron, it's a Celeron disguised as an i9.
Good luck.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts - Major US vendor. Rats this upgrade has been painful.

Turns out that the cpu was incorrect - somebody did a return product scam and swapped the CPU and repackaged. I did not verify when I popped it into the board (my error). Lesson learned.
All is good now I9-12900 performing as expected. Thank you.

Sorry to hear you ran afoul of a scam artist. It happens all too often I'm afraid. At least you didn't have any issue with the return, I have often seen retailers refuse a return claiming consumer fraud on the part of the victim. It's why I video unpacking new stuff these days, just in case such a thing happens to me.
Enjoy the new system
