How to install a PCIE X4 card into the 4th PCIE X1 slot on Z690 pro rs:

So the 4th pcie slot from top on the z690 pro rs board is a pcie 3.0 x1 slot but if you look carefully, the end of the slot is open ended. Because the end is open, that means that even though it is only x1 wired slot, you can actually put a higher number of lane pcie card by removing or repositioning the standoff screw for the nvme m2 that is next to this slot.

If you reposition the m2 standoff from its default position for 22110 to the location for a regular 2280 m2, then you will be able to fit an x4 pcie card in this slot.

If you reposition the m2 standoff to 2260, then you can fit an x8 pcie card in this slot.

If you remove the m2 standoff all together, then you can fit an x16 card in this slot.

Obviously the x4 and x16 cards are limited to the pcie 3.0 x1 speed for that slot. But a lot of these x4 and x16 cards really don't use anywhere near the x4 and x16 potential. For example, it is highly unlikely that a quadro nvs 510 would really have much difference in performance living in a pcie 3.0 x1 or x16 given that it is a low bandwidth application card.

Similarly, many sata/sas pcie controller card maybe ok in a pcie 3.0 x1 as long as you are not using them with ssd or a big raid setup. Then the x1 bandwidth might just be enough.

This tip is just to allow people to have more flexibility if you don't already know about it ;)

Dear Wildpig1234,

Nice tip, but this only applies to PCIE cards, that can work with 1 lane.
But it's worth a try

Kind Regards
