Subject: AM1B-ITX max RAM

Hi,
on http://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/AM1B-ITX/index.asp page I read that this MB can handle up to 32 GB RAM. On Memory list only 8 GB modules are listed. As the MB has 2 dimm socket, how can I achieve 32 GB RAM?
Are 32 GB RAM supported (and usable) by the Athlon AD5350JAH44HM cpu?

Regards,
V.

I would have to say no, 16gb is the max for that board. I am guessing that the 32gb listed on the product page is a typo. I checked 4 different 16gb DDR3 RAM modules compatibility (on the RAM product pages) and they all listed the AM1B-ITX as incompatible. That isn't surprising though given all the 16gb single modules I could find were server class RDIMMs.

If I may ask, why would you want 32gb of RAM in an AM1 system? I am just curious what application you have in mind for a low power system with that much RAM.

VMware ESxi 6.0.0.
I currently have 8 GB (1333 MHz), I would like to upgrade as RAM costs not so much in this days maybe 32 GB will be better.

Thank you

The memory capacity on this platform is determined by the processor being used. The memory controller is part of the CPU on AM1 APUs.

I checked the specs of each of the processors compatible with this board, and all of them state 16GB maximum memory. For example:

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Jaguar/AMD-Athlon%205350%20-%20AD5350JAH44HM.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Jaguar/AMD-Athlon%205350%20-%20AD5350JAH44HM.html

As Xaltar said, that specification must be a mistake. That is, unless future AM1 processors will support 32GB.

Thank you all.
DO you thin Crucial Ballistix Sport RAM Kit 16GB (2x8 GB), DDR3, 1600 MT/s, PC3-12800, CL9, 1.5V, DIMM 240pin (code bls2cp8g3d1609ds1s00ceu) will be good for am1b-itx?

I cannot guarantee it will work with your CPU and board, but my experience with Crucial memory has been good, and a similar model of Crucial memory is in use in my ASRock X99 board.

I tried running this tool at Crucial's website to check compatibility with your board. It is listed if you choose ASRock, mother boards, and then AM1B-ITX, from the drop down lists. But each time I clicked the "Find Upgrade" button, nothing happens! Maybe you will have better luck:

According to Crucial's http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/bls2cp8g3d1609ds1s00ceu" rel="nofollow - product page for that RAM it is compatible. Click the link, select ASRock -> ASRock Motherboards -> AM1B-ITX and it will load and tell you it is compatible.

Hi,
thank you all.
I will upgrade to 16 GB soon as the installation of VMware ESXi 6.0.0 U2 on the system has been successfull.
The AM1B-ITX is compatible (usable) with the last current version of ESXi.
I followed this guide to http://www.valent-blog.eu/2016/04/06/installazione-di-vmware-esxi-6-u2-su-asrock-am1b-itx-con-cpu-amd-athlon-5350/" rel="nofollow - http://www.valent-blog.eu/2016/04/06/installazione-di-vmware-esxi-6-u2-su-asrock-am1b-itx-con-cpu-amd-athlon-5350/
(in italian, my mother language) in order to achive this goal;
I mean I only needed a temporary NIC card during the setup then you are free to remove it and use the onboard nic card.

Regards,
V.
