hi,
Last time i built my own PC was more than 10 years ago and things have changed....so I am planning to do it again and buy this mobo and have a powersupply question. What's the story with the ATX 12V power connector 8 pin vs 4 pin? the power supply i am about to get is  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171098" rel="nofollow - Cooler Master GM Series G550M  and offers a 4 pin plug just like most power supplies. The manual for this mobo seems to suggest that a 4 pin is still ok but i wanted to check. Thoughts? thank you

I may not be quite certain what you are asking about.

The PSU you provided the link to, actually has an eight pin ATX 12V CPU power cable/connector.

If you scroll down a bit on the overview page of this PSU, you can see the 4 + 4 pin CPU power cable/connector.

It uses the split, 4 plus 4 pin type connector, so it can be used with mother boards that only have a four pin ATX 12V CPU power connector. This connector can be used with an eight pin power connector on a mother board. You simply connect both of the four pin connectors.

I have PSU's that have this type of ATX 12V CPU power cable/connector, which are functionally no different than a single 8 pin connector on the cable from the PSU.

The H97M Pro4 board has an eight pin ATX 12V CPU power connector, and the ATX 12V CPU power cable from this PSU will not leave any pins unconnected.

The point of eight vs four pins on this cable is just to provide more power (current/watts) to the CPU voltage regulator stage. There aren't any components that are not connected to the 12V rail of the PSU if just a four pin cable/connector from the PSU is used.

Intel mother boards that can over clock a processor can benefit from having an eight pin instead of four pin cable/connector to provide power to the CPU.

In your case the Haswell processors that can be used in your board do not use large amounts of power, and an H97 chipset does not allow over clocking. The eight pin CPU power connector on this board is really more than is necessary, but it doesn't hurt anything, and the PSU will be presented with a slightly lower resistance connection.

Bottom line, you have nothing to worry about with that PSU. Or what am I missing?

yes my bad, sorry and thank you for your reply. I confused in my mind the different connectors. It is an 8 pin.
