Subject: AMD PSP 11.0 Device - Spontaneous Reboots

So it looks like ASROCK just released a BIOS update on the 26th of June, for my Motherboard... The B650E PG Riptide Wifi.

This particular BIOS update included a fix for AMD PSP Devices.

Ironically... this may have solved a serious problem then I was having, that I never thought to attribute to the AMD PSP 11.0 Device.

My PC was spontaneously rebooting, in the middle of gaming.

But ONLY, with 2 specific Games, and none others!

Specifically, with Conan Exiles, and Star Citizen.

I could go hours and hours on games like Far Cry 5 & 6, Assassin's Creed Vahalla, Crysis Remastered, Fallout 76... all with graphics settings maxed, and never experience a single problem.

But as soon as I would load up Star Citizen or Conan Exiles... BAM, those games would spontaneously reboot within 15 mins to an hour, of gameplay. I've been trying to find an answer to the problem ever since I built this PC new, just 2 months ago. No blue screens... no stuttering issues... just, sudden and spontaneous reboot and obscure errors in Event Viewer saying "the pc rebooted unexpectedly" ... Screen would go black, and the PC would just completely reboot itself.

But apparently, after flashing my BIOS to the latest version on the 26th of June...

I've not experienced a single reboot since.

I don't want to jump the gun to soon and say its fixed, but its been just over 9 days since it last happened... and that's the longest I've gone without it happening.

So... thanks, Asrock.

For fixing a serious problem thats taken me nearly two months to find an answer to!

Thanks for sharing the info, now anyone searching google for a solution can stumble
on it. Fingers crossed it was the solution you needed

Hi, would be interesting to see if the voltages has changed between the new and old bios of the CLDO, VDDG, whatever new on zen4

Using zentiming to check voltages has been crucial to iron out instability caused by insufficient voltages due to lack of experience from AMD/motherboard maker.

Yea well...

Turns out that wasn't the fix after all.

Damn thing rebooted again...

12 days since its last reboot.

I just don't get it anymore... why with just only two games, and no others?   Why is it always taking longer and longer to happen?   A few days... a week... 12 days...

Why does every individual part pass every single stress test, torture test, benchmark.. that I throw at it... then I go and log into this one game and bam it reboots the PC minutes later? Yet the same games have no problems on my other PC's.

I could run Prime95 for hours and hours, torture testing the CPU or the RAM... and not have a single problem... then go log into one of these two games and suddenly the damn thing reboots again.

Its been two and half months since I bought these parts and built this rig, and I cant take the parts back to the store anymore cause its taken so damn long to try to figure this problem out, I'm already well passed the stores 30 day return policy... and I wouldn't know which part to return anyway.

All I can do is try this idea for a fix, try that idea for a fix...then sit and wait days... a week, two weeks... to see if it works or not.

At this point I don't know what to do anymore other then take it to some local I.T. shop and let them figure it out.

Given a BIOS update seemed to help, at least somewhat, I would look into the possibility
that you have a power delivery issue. Those particular games may be demanding more
from your system in a particular way that causes power protections to kick in and
restart the system. It could be causing the GPU to switch power states in a way
that results in a power dip or spike beyond normal tolerances. The BIOS update
may have made some changes/improvements to the power delivery to your PCIe slots
and given the impression of an improvement. If it's still happening however, it
could indicate a PSU issue.

If you have another PSU you can test with I would give that a go.

Yea, I would have to buy a whole new PSU.

But the thing is, my current one is an eVGA Supernova 750W G2...
https://www.evga.com/products/specs/psu.aspx?pn=eac89383-65ea-4fd4-925e-fc6d7480dcb7" rel="nofollow - https://www.evga.com/products/specs/psu.aspx?pn=eac89383-65ea-4fd4-925e-fc6d7480dcb7

A rebranded Superflower Leadex.   Its been rock solid since I bought it new when it was first released.   Though to be fair, that was around 2014 so it is already almost 10 years old.

For reference, the system is a Ryzen 7 7700X with 32GB GSkill DDR5-6000; on an ASRock B650E PG Riptide Wifi; with an Intel ARC A770 16GB GPU.   Its got an Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer II 240 for the cpu cooler, and at least 3 m.2 SSD's, as well as 3 Sata SSDs, and 1 bluray reader. 3 case fans that are aRGB, as well as the two aRGB fans on the radiator cooler.

The Motherboard has two 12v power connectors on it.. an 8pin and a 4pin.. but my PSU only has an 8pin plug so I used that one presuming it was the correct one. Should I have been using the 4 pin, or using both at the same time?   There's no info in the manual that specified a difference between the two, nor anything that specified my CPU required any one over the other; or both.

So... is there a reason my current 750w PSU isn't enough for all that? Other then the fact that its getting old and reaching the end of its warranty lifespan?

Also... IF, I were to buy a newer PSU...

Is 750w still enough?

Most all the PSU Calculators out there tell me the most I need is around 550 - 600... Except for the one on Newegg's website, which tells me I need 650 - 700, but I think thats just Newegg trying to sell you the idea that you should buy a more expensive PSU from them.

So either 750w isn't enough... or my current one is finally showing its age and my new Ryzen 7 7700x is beating it up harder then my old overclocked i5 4690k, that the 7700x replaced.

PSUs have a finite lifespan due to the capacitors used in them. That said, I see
now you have an Arc GPU. There are still some teething issues with the drivers for
Arc, it could quite easily be behind your issues. Drivers tend to have optimizations
for specific games which makes it quite possible the 2 games that are crashing in
your configuration could simply lack or have bugged optimization in the drivers.

As for PSUs, I tend to replace mine every 5 years or so, or at least get them
recapped. 10 years is a great showing for a PSU but it has likely begun to degrade
(capacitors). It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace it, maybe keep it as a backup
but it may not solve the issue if it's driver related.

As for the CPU power connenctors (8 and 4 pin), you only need to connect the 8pin.
The additional 4 pin is optional and only really needed in more extreme overclocking
scenarios.

Well... as for the ARC GPU and its Drivers...
I've been going back and forth with Intel's ARC Support techs for the past 2 months, and though they have NOT yet denied that its their issue... they have also yet to replicate the issue on their end.

They do have a Overlay stat monitor, that shows all the GPU's stats, etc... Temp, watts, volts, ram use, ram temp, fane speeds, etc etc etc.... and you can have this Overlay visible during game play.   They also have a recording feature in their Driver software that you can use to record your gameplay.

On several occasions, I've tried to record my game play, with that Overlay visible on the screen... Hoping to catch something when the system Reboots.

Unfortunately, every time its happened... the Video File ends up being not being properly saved and is corrupted and Intel says they can't do anything with it.

IF .. I had a way of recording the screen and ensuring the recording file didn't get corrupted during a spontaneous and unexpected reboot... without having to use my Cell Phone that can't record much more then 10 mins before it runs out of space :/   ...then I might be able to catch something in this ARC Overlay that might prove/disprove whether its the GPU.

I would be able to see if the GPU suddenly spikes in its power consumption...

But I don't know of any screen capture/recording software that WOULDN'T end up giving me corrupted save file after a sudden and unexpected reboot.

As for the PSU.

Do you think 750w IS enough, or if decide to buy a new one, should I go up to an 850w?

A decent 750w should be enough yes. I would shoot for a gold rated 80+ unit. Do
some research before buying, there is a lot of garbage out there unfortunately.
An 850w wouldn't hurt anything and would give you some headroom for future
upgrades though. Anything more than that is really overkill for most use cases.

you can stream it online then with VLC you can record your live stream into another PC
