Subject: Z790 Steel Legend XMP Problem

I started playing Age of Wonders 4 which was crashing non stop. I was told that one solution was to turn off XMP in BIOS. In the OC Tweaking in BIOS, the XMP options are either "Auto" or the XMP 3.0 profile. There is no option to disable XMP. CPU-Z appears to show XMP 3.0 is active.

Intel Core i7 13700K
ASRock Z790 Steel Legend WiFi
-BIOS version 7.04 (2/16/2023)
2 x 32 GBytes G.Skill DDR5-6400 RAM
NVidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

auto will load jedec standard for me, so that equals 'xmp off'.

That's my hope but the memory monitor seems to suggest XMP 3.0 is active. I have a difficult time understanding the BIOS but it seems like "disabled" should have been an option.

Thanks for the help!

have you also set dram frequency to auto in bios?

btw. if you mean the memory monitor in bios, you got to save and exit first before the settings take effect, then re-enter bios to see the actual speed.

Hi! I was referring (perhaps incorrectly) to a CPU-Z report which seems to say that XMP 3.0 is enabled. Any settings are out of the box - I haven't made any changes to BIOS.

can you post a screenshot of the cpu-z memory tab?

The SPD-Tab is just showing the capabilities, not the current speed, that is shown on the memory tab. So it looks like the memory is running at about 2000 MHz, equaling ddr4000. If you where at XMP speed the memory tab would read about 3200 MHz.

here is an example of my rig with ddr5-5600 (2800Mhz) running at xmp speed:

using asrock's customized cpu-z

Thank you so much for the help. I was out of my depth and getting frustrated so it's really appreciated.

Now this is clear let's try to get to the issue you have with the game! perhaps it will work better when you set XMP to 'on' and 'load all settings' in bios, this will mean the memory gets faster and some voltages are increased, so if it works it's usually the best option to just go by those settings.

You are running a very old version of the BIOS...

Its pretty likely that updating will have better compatibility with your memory.
