" rel="nofollow - I just installed a DVD burner and now the computer locks up after sleep mode. It does not lock up every time but 1 out of 3 times it will. It did not do this before I installed the DVD. I also noticed that when I do a scan for hardware change in device manager it locks up too and it didn?™t before the DVD was installed. I am using an Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner and I also tried a Samsung 24X SH-224GB/BSBE and they both do the same thing. I tried both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro both have the same problem. I tried looking for new firmware and driver for both DVD?™s but I did not find any. Right now I have the DVD unplugged and it has not locked up after sleep or when scanning for hardware changes. I searched Google for Windows problem with lock up after sleep but none of them fixed it and found nothing for DVD lock up after sleep so I am guessing it is something to do with the mother board or configuration.

IMO this is either the cable / built in capacitor on the cable used to power BOTH drives, or, the PERIF1 or SATAx modular socket/connection on the side of the PSU. OR, your SATA data cable is defective, twisted. bent tight etc etc ......

But one drive, maybe.

Yet two drives, no. It's more likely data cable or power related.

Your board has two SATA controllers, the main Intel from the Z170 chipset, and the add on ASMedia SATA controller.

Which SATA port is the DVD drive connected to? The four ASMedia SATA ports are labeled 19 and 20 in the picture below:

If it is connected to any of the ASMedia SATA ports, move the SATA data cable to one of the Intel SATA ports.

If it is connected to one of the Intel SATA ports, let us know, I may have an explanation for that too.

Did you check the Windows Event and Error logs for any clues about this problem?

" rel="nofollow - I tried a different sata cable and power cable to DVD and it still locks up in device manager when I check for hardware changes. The DVD sata cable goes to #19 on the right and I just switched it to #15 on the left. I know how to get to the event viewer but I don't know what to look for when I get there. Where is the error log at? I am testing sleep mode now, it has to sleep for a while before it locks up.

" rel="nofollow - Have you tried a new SATA cable? Make sure it is SATA 3 compliant.

After switching sata cable to 15 left it no longer locks up in device manager when scanning for hardware changes. Still testing sleep mode.

If changing power and data cables didn't change this issue then my vote is for a defective drive.

The sata cables are the ones that came with the mother board 26awg e320444 amw style 21149 80'c.

Device manager when scanning for hardware changes works now in win 7 and win10 after switching to sata port 15 left. Still checking sleep mode so far it is working.
