Subject: Follow-up help....X99 Extreme MB MAC address
Date Posted: 25 Feb 2017 at 10:59am

I had built a rig with a ASRock X99 Extreme4 motherboard.  The board failed, and I replaced it under warranty with the same board.  When I booted the computer, I got a message during the post that requires me to hit F! in order to continue the boot process.  I was told by ASRock tech support that this is a problem requiring a reflash of the board.  The instructions I received are below, but keep reading below that please:

Dear ualdriver,

Greetings, this is ASRock TSD.

Please follow the below steps to re-flash the MAC address :

Step 1. Please download the MAC Tool(Version 2.07A) at the link below:
http://www.asrock.com/support/download/mactool.asp" rel="nofollow - http://www.asrock.com/support/download/mactool.asp
Step 2. Put the file onto a bootable USB device and unzip it.
Step 3. Reboot system then press [F11] to enter the Boot Menu.
Step 4. Select your "USB device" in the Boot Menu, afterward, your system will boot into the DOS environment.
Step 5. Please key in the command below:
(1) MAC (press enter)
(2) MAC c xxxxxxxxxxxx (xxxxxxxxxxxx is the MAC address which is posted on the edge of the motherboard, 12 digits in total)

After you key in the command at Step 5.2, the system will re-flash the MAC automatically.

Thanks!

All the best,
ASRock TSD

Unfortunately, I can't get this to work.  I downloaded the file, unzipped the file, put all the unzipped files onto two separate, freshly formatted USB drives, and am not having any luck.

With one  http://www.walmart.com/search/%3cquery=usb+drive" rel="nofollow - USB stick , when I  hit F11 and select it, it just boots straight to Windows.  With the other  http://www.walmart.com/search/%3cquery=usb+drive" rel="nofollow - USB stick , I get an error that says "An operating system was found........" and when I hit any key to continue, it boots to Windows.

Is there an alternate way to reflash the MAC address or can you provide me with some guidance on how to get the system to boot on the  http://www.walmart.com/search/%3cquery=usb+drive" rel="nofollow - USB drive  with the files on it?

Thanks!

You need to make/create the USB stick bootable first. Then copy the contents of the zip file onto the root of the usb stick, along with the other files that are there.

Then, THEN, begin at step 3 of the directions.

If you need help making the usb stick bootable, simply reply back.

Just be careful that you select the USB stick and not NOT an HDD with data on it Wink

After creating it unpack and copy the zip file contents to the root, then at the post scree IIRC it';s F11 to select which device to boot from, then once booted to it begin following at Step 3 with the commands to flash the MAC Address.

Again, post back your progress.

Thanks wardog.  Do you have a different program I can try?  I've tried 5 different USB sticks, old ones, USB 3.0, USB adapters with SD cards and am getting one of two errors: This device is write protected (they're not), and unable to format drive.

OK, I found an alternate "create a bootable USB drive" program and got the whole thing to work.  However, the steps as written above didn't work for me exactly.

Under Step 5 there are 4 sub steps.  When I typed in cd MAC207A, I got the following error message: CHDIR failed for 'MAC207A' with the little apostrophes.  However, when I skipped that step and just typed in MAC, then the program worked and it flashed the MAC address.  Now the MB boots up without me having to hit F1 all the time.

Thanks for all of your help!

I apologize for the misguided directions and will bring this to their attention.

Yea, I just downloaded that zip file. There is no need to dir or cd to MAC207A as there is not one. Wacko

Again, my apologies.

Yet Thank you for coming back to say your figured the bootable and dir issue.

It's great that you also now have a correctly working computer. Enjoy!

Dear friend, although all the above procedure has been done, I can not boot my motherboard receded. Z170 Extreme6 +.

I made the bootable (diskpart) pendrive, put the 2.07A file inside, but it still does not restart, it does not boot.

How should I proceed. Forgive me for my English, because I'm not American, I'm Brazilian.

I have a lot of haste in the solution, because my client is on my feet ...

Tanks. Ouch

I'm sorry but I must ask you if you extracted the contents of the mac207A.zip file.

That is, you right clicked on the file and chose "Extract All...", which will result in a folder called mac207A. That folder must be copied to the pendrive, not the mac207a.zip file.

If you did copy the mac207A folder to the pendrive, did you restart the PC, go into the UEFI/BIOS, and check that the pendrive was listed first in the Boot order, in the Boot screen? If it is not first in the boot order, you must select the pendrive to be the first in the boot order.
