" rel="nofollow -       I have the Z170 OC Formula MB and I use a M.2 in the M.2_1 slot for windows boot/OS. I have a 1TB SSD that I use for windows games/programs in the SATA3_1 slot. I am trying to setup a HDD for a Linux system that I can choose at the boot manager. Booting from a usb and live cd both fail with storage configuration errors. If I have the M.2_1 slot for my windows boot system which slot would I put a 1TB SSD for windows programs and games? Right now its in SATA3_1 and works but the manual says it would be disabled if the m.2 slot is used.
What slot would a bluray optical sata drive go to? Right now its in a random one but works as well. But to be technically correct is there a slot it should go into? Also, what slot for a 1tb hdd that I'd like to use separate of the m.2 and ssd so I am able to have a Linux system? If the sata ports are connected to certain ones I need the M.2 and SSD and BluRay Drive compatible and a separate HDD for Linux that can use the blu ray drive but doesn't have to. Sorry, I am confused on the jibber from the manual, one part says if certain ones are used the others are disabled and then another part says certain ones share with others. I use uefi with cfm disabled and would like to keep it as is for boot times. I've tried enabling cfm with uefi only but still no success on Linux, I've tried multiple different Linux distros with all of them failing at the boot up stage with references to child and parent things not responding as well as certain things frozen. I googled it and came across something mentioning asmedia but continued to swirl down the rabbit hole.

So basically....

M.2 windows boot in M.2_1 slot

SSD sata for windows games programs in______ slot?
Bluray sata drive in _______slot?
HDD Linux system in sata_______?
Hotswap port on top of pc case in sata _____slot?
esata port on top of case in sata ____ slot?

Here's the error I recieve when trying to boot with Linux install or live and numerous distros. This is the reason I am concerned with sata hookup.

" rel="nofollow - Are you going to install grub boot manager, or simply hit F11 at boot to choose which drive(OS) to boot?

I'd like to make a kind suggestion, and don't take this the wrong way, but if this is challenging you then I would stay far away from grub and instead use the F11 menu instead.

Grub can confuse noobs that aren't fully aware of how and why it works. And maybe more, how to remove an OS or completely uninstall grub and end up with a bootable system after, w/o hours of work and using BCD. ie: grub can be/get complicated.

No offense taken. On my laptops hard drive I have 40 partitions with about 38 linux distros. Grub or any other forms of it not an issue

And I'm not trying to multi boot with Windows. I am trying to install on a completely different hard drive then windows is on. A gpt formatted hard drive but can not make it passed the live or install choice screen.

Or so implies Google:

While the above two threads are old, I can't believe they're still not relevant.

Meh, after I hit enter to post that it doesn't much make sense. The Z170 chipset has been around long enough to have been addressed by now

Maybe. Is the HDD/SSD you're installing to by chance occupied in one of the above DISABLED SATA ports?

That could result in what your seeing across all those distros.

Keep me posted pleased. This is perplexing.

edit, is to Is

Yea. With you, now considering, Grub isn't an issue, is it? Tongue

It's the internet and I wouldn't  be doing my job if I didn't offer that up. Thanks for the "No offense taken"

I unplugged my corsair strafe rgb keyboard and unplugged logitech g430? Mouse as I read others having issues in Linux with them. Used a old keyboard with the circle connector, and got these errors same time between choosing live/install and actually booting into it.

By booting into the live mode it should at least boot even if one of the sata plugs were disabled but I'm confident I got that part figured out. Biggest issue probably has to do with the uefi options and the xhci usb handoff options but I've tried both ways and even reset bios to default and tried. I do have a wifi/Bluetooth pcie that gets power from the usb port on motherboard

And I also have a 3.0 usb connector that goes to the case which has roughly 4 usb ports. Going to try to disconnect that and see if it makes it further. Tempted to just run virtual but would rather have a dedicated hard drive for Linux and can't find the option to enable the hard drive to the virtual session in its entirety

Must have been the sata ports after all. I changed sata3_a2 to sata3_5 which was optical drive. Going to reconnect the usb devices one at a time and see if that was the only problem this whole time.

" rel="nofollow - See its confusing because this blu ray drive is sata and the options in advanced storage configuration for sata As such as sata3_a1 etc do not show an option of choosing if it's a hard drive or solid state drive. Being neither you'd think it'd connect to one of the sataAs. But just having changed it and working in Linux in a sata3_5 I am now confused whether I should choose hard drive or ssd or if it matters. What are sata3_As for?

SATA3_A# 's are the ASMedia SATA Controller ports. They are most likely NOT compatible with ODDs.

They're also slow as all get out as far as SATA speeds are concerned. If you expect or need speed from a drive stick to the non-A ports.

If it's a file server the ASMedia ports work just great.

Everything else works after plugging all in. Was just the sata ports configuration. Went through some loops when I should have stuck with my first assumption.    but do appreciate the help and assistance to say the least    that looks like a kiss symbol but I picked the star so if it's a kissing star I just meant a star lol

Good. Glad to hear it's sorted now.

Enjoy.

" rel="nofollow - Thank you for the help. So avoid asmedia sata ports if possible unless it's for a file server. Do you know if the advanced storage configuration settings matter much? I notice default sets the sata ports to hard disk drive, should I worry about changing to ssd? And should I make sure hot swap is on for the hot swap port to the top of the case or does it really affect anything? This has been first pc I built by individual parts and this motherboard has been full of options for a first timer.

Yea. You certainly chose an option laden motherboard to learn on.

Hot swap is very drive dependent. Best you probably use it as a removable drive and remove it like you would a USB drive, from the taskbar.
