Decided to have a look in BIOS (X370 Fatality ITX ac BIOS 3.10) to see how to OC my 2400  Crucial Ballistix to 2666 ( no heavy GPU stuff so nothing dramatic required, just read in sticky here that 2666mhz is the sweet spot for users such as me ..
Not quite sure how to read what I see, so comments welcome.
We all have to start somewhere.............

The line "DRAM Frequency"

Click on the item "DDR4-3733" and you will be offered a myriad of choices.

You chose 3733 previously, which Boot Training obviously corrected for. Choose 2666 from the list and post back the results.

Hint: When Enables, AM4 Advanced Boot Training will maybe override your selection, so consider that.

Right,  got that....... ( not sure where the 3733 came from though!)
will have a go at 2666  and check with CPU-z
Many thanks.

A Primer of sorts. Ryzen/ThreadRipper DRAM settings and their function.

The options available will vary from board to board, BIOSes too.

as above really

the ram may well jump to 2666 with those loose timings (maybe set the ram volts to 1.35~1.375)

you may need to adjust 'fail count' to 5 (top option second linked picture)

and before patting yourself on the back turn it off leave 10 mins and cold boot it

the cold boot with overclocked ram is the hard part to get right Ouch

As you suggested, and straight to 2666............so very happy with that..........i know its a fleabite compared to what some people are attempting and getting, but  this is only an R3-1200 with an R7 240 2GB........ and destined for a RavenRidge next month anyway......or t least after first  few reviews signal its good and stable......So 2666 is great!
Thanks again for the guiding hands and words you guys, much appreciated.

HaHa....You have me sussed Datonyb!.I know I`m a wuss......but whole OC thing is new to me, only the Ryzen platform being so flexible and amenable to a tweak , whilst at the same time benefiting from faster ram, given me the urge to at least have a go....
I admit, I am sore tempted to keep on pushing, see what it will go to...........
It is cheap ram, but by a few accounts decent enough, Crucial Ballocks, sport 2400, 2 x8Gb and dual, not just 2 sticks, and was £65 last October from Amazon.........Sheeesh.
Just run it at 2666 a day or so, then maybe another tweak.........

to be honest
now with later bios releases its a lot easier to play with ram than last march-april

check the 2666 is stable ,save it in bios as a profile ,and give the 2933 setting a try

as i said your ram is sitting at quite loose timings , maybe you will need to give the ram a little voltage tickle 1.35-1.375, and test it again if it dosnt play nicely then click the saved profile back on for 2666

i got 2400 cursair ram to 2933 on simple one click a-xmp on a b350 msi and thats been stable for many months now

as i said though its the cold start the next day that may play up

Ta for that:
I have the voltage at 1.35 now, seems stable enough, saved as profile 1 (of 3)
I thought to try 2800 next, then look at timings.. done a google round on clocking this ram and lots of positives on just playing with the timing, even to point of leaving the speed alone.Reduced latency etc makes up for actual Mhz
Does seem it is noted as a decent overclocking ram though, nothing outrageous, but a decent tweak to be had.

There are literally terabytes on mem overclocking.

Read, tinker, learn.

And in that process don't hesitate to clear the BIOS vs 9.3hrs of headbanging.

We're here when ya need us.

remember though you may have to start again with the new cpu

as the memory controller is on the chip

but knowing your ram is half the battle .it may even be a better memory controller on the new 2400g you get

Have a lot more confidence after being walked through it by members here
Point of interest  for anyone going for the Raven ridge..seems dual rank gives much better performance than single, dual channel or not........
Unsure of my ram I did some digging...............and found this.
If it is accurate it may come in handy for some.

" rel="nofollow - can screenshot this BIOS with f12.........
Tried 3066 and 3200, set voltage at 1.35, even loosened timings a bit but just hangs about a while and defaults to 2400. Failover set to 5.     happy nuff with 2933,  (   for now) and might have another dabble later.
Point noted about clearing CMOS prior to new CPU/APU. Makes sense.
Was going to use AIDA64 but only 30 day trial with some data blanked, so any freeware alternatives worth a look?  Found lots but hard to know what`s good and what`s not.

yeah my aida run out too

i just use cinebench to test ,its not as good for specific numbers but hey i do 5 runs take the best score and compare it to next set of timings and speed for the ram to see if it actually got better or worse

example being some tighter extreme profile timings for 3200 run better than fast 3333 and its more stable (circa 10 cinebench points better)

i am a big fan of 1usmus ryzen timing calculator though it makes things a lot quicker and i must say better than my own trial and error

Will have a go with cinebench as you suggest, Wardog said he just uses 3Dmark now because of the detrimental effects some of the other similar programmes can have. 3Dmark takes ages though.
Not heard of that 1usmus  calculator bfore, I will have a look at that too.
Thanks again !

its quite simple to use takes about 20 mins to do

once again take piccies or print off the table then refer to them in bios to make settings

its a walk in the park mate
there should st5ill be a video guide on that link

basically heres the deal

you download a program called thiaphoon burner run it and extract your actual rams timings and data
you enter this into the left hand coloum
then select the speed you WANT to run it at, this then can calculate timings specifically for your rams chips to enter into bios to suit ryzen more than the settings from xmp to suit intel

your choices are safe/fast/extreme

its the results after you click calculate from dram calculator you want to print or tak a phone piccie

then fly into bios and use the results

and yes im afraid you want to FIND ALL the bits in your bios to adjust as the ryzen timing calculator works on ALL settings matching its results

e.g. if you just enter the first 6 main ones then the chances of it working are slimmer by far and to be honest much less stable and zippier than some good settings like trfc  which is very very high as stock but can be reduced vastly for a good increase in system

Ah that helps!
I have dloaded Taiphonn Burner, loaded my Dram, and printed the results.
Also dloaded 1ismus, but was under impression I had to manually transfer all burner info on my ram over to the calculator.that is what stalled me.. some headers-descriptions don't match and did not want to enter wrong figure in any box.
I will just concentrate on what is needed in the left hand column, then select speed etc.
Quite a learning curve this last week or so!  So have to give the nod to you for your help!

PS just had a quick look round the big 5 sites.........UK  . and some serious off loading going on as you say!

yeah just scroll down thiaphoon to last xmp box
click show results in nanoseconds and thats the numbers you enter

i just watched mindblank (youtube)

clocking the bejesus out of a 2400g and his ram

3.9ghz/1550 mhz gpu/3466 ram

truely he loves the 2400g and how its the go to apu if your planning on a £100 gpu (1030gtx or rx550)

good news for guys facing stupid gpu prices trickled down due to crypto prices on higher end cards

some mad results around 10mins 30 seconds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VfB5_pI8kU

towards the end of video hes astonished how the apu can give 80 frames at 3440 resolution Clap

mindblank is a smart guy

was the first youtube channel to show ram at 3600, now the clever fracker runs 3600 ram at cl14

fair play to him, he also is pretty good with sharing tips and tricks and good detailed testing

it does indeed look like the 2400g has a considerably better memory controller though, which it should'nt be that much so due to same arctitechture, but hey ho the ram speed is now even more important to ryzens with the added graphics

im lucky with mine

mostly all thiaphoon/ryzen calculator and the bios are in same order

like most things just double check everything

the CAD section is worst ,as there are two cad sections you want the one with 4 tabs not 3

and the adjusted settings are in ohms

ps you dont have a cold boot dram section so dont look for it  Smile

but you should have 'dram power down' disable that
switch amd advanced boot training on/auto and set try attempts to 5 (in dram timing tab)

I agree:  I am happy enough with 2933 on that ram, and it is still a bargain, bought in March 17 fr £65 for 2x8GB on Amzon.
I still have 2 x 8GB Corsair vengeance LPX @  3200mhz, so I think I will use that when I put the 2400G in later today.
I am lifting a 1200 and that can go in my other ITX MB, ASrock AB350 ITX, so I can get up to the 4.4 BIOS on that too, because I hope to get a 2200G on that board! The 2933 Crucial can live on that.
Some amazing vids coming out re these RR APUs!

" rel="nofollow - Will do!
Oh best mention, something I think you recommended I do after BIOS update........on first boot afterwards go back into BIOS and set UEFI to default. Well I went into BIOS and was a bit concerned that the 960 still was not showing...........just something called  "easi drive 1100" or similar.
Anyway, set UEFI to default  and 960 immediately appeared on the list! and the strange drive was gone.
So saved and let it boot into windows and all seems well.
Any particular tests you would like me to run?
Just ran cinebench CPU......807
