Subject: Why is my Ryzen 7 1800X at 52* C at idle
Date Posted: 06 Mar 2018 at 9:56am
" rel="nofollow - First thing I noticed while I first started the computer after completing the build is that the CPU is reported in the UEFI at 52* C at idle.  It does not feel that hot so I did some reading and it says that AMD set the temp reading up 20* C so in essence, the CPU is running at 32* C idle.  Any truth to this?

Also, as I am new to this, how do I determine if my 3600 memory is running at 3600 and not a lower frequency?  Can I see this in the UEFI or do I have to wait until Win 10 is loaded to find out what the memory is running at?

Thanks

" rel="nofollow - Problem #2.  I just loaded Windows 10 to my EVO960 M2 drive and now when I try to restart my computer I get the message:  "An operating system wasn't found".

Any ideas on this one?  Currently running UEFI P3.2 should I upgrade to the newest one?  I understand that I am going to need to upgrade to P3.3 then P4.4 then BETA 4.41.  Is this also correct and should I go to the BETA UEFI or wait and stay at the P4.4?

DunGoneNuts, I think your assumptions on temperature are close.  Mine is showing 55 C.  Download CPU-Z to see what is going on in your Processor.  I suggest you Flash to 3.3 then Beta 4.41.  Have not seen the 'no system' message.  Please remind us if it is still there after 4.41.  Enjoy, John.

You're correct, in BIOS the CPU temp reads 20c above the actual temp.  HWMonitor/CPUZ all show an idle of 30 for me, while bios shows 50.

<DISCLAIMER>I have a completely different motherboard and processor but a lot of what you're experiencing rings bells.</DISCLAIMER>

There is something weird about the temperature reporting of, I think, "X" designated Ryzens. I've heard of it but as I don't have any I haven't followed it up. Try Google! I do definitely recall there being a 20 degree offset when measured in certain ways. I would think that the major monitoring tools would take it into account by now.

In the BIOS for my board the memory speed is shown on the Main page. If you haven't explicitly enabled XMP though, your RAM will be running at 2133 MHz (the fastest JEDEC profile) - again, that's my experience based on my hardware. You should be able to turn on XMP in the OC Tweaker page and then choose the speed manually. You should be able to select 2400 without any problem because that's the normal operating speed of the Ryzen's memory controller, L3 cache and Infinity Fabric. On my Raven Ridge APU it's a bit faster at 2933. Anything faster than that is technically overclocking (even if you don't plan to overclock the cores) and it's shown as such in the motherboard specs and RAM QVL. You might get it to work at 3200 just by setting that profile but you're pushing the memory controller and the rest of the "uncore" quite hard so you might need to tweak other parameters to get it to work reliably.

You don't say which BIOS you're using but if you've updated to the latest non-beta as a matter of course you might have chosen a bad one. Certainly that's the case for my board and several others. It seems that in the rush to support Raven Ridge a number of things got broken. One of them is the ability to recognise certain M.2 SSDs. The Samsung 960 EVO is one of them. Certainly, that was my experience. The fix is easy though. Upgrade the the latest beta BIOS.

Edit: I notice that you did say which BIOS you're using so the last paragraph might not apply to you. In any case switch to the latest beta and that ought to fix your boot problem.

" rel="nofollow - Thanks for the info.  This is weird though.  I have the EVO960 as the M2 drive which is supposed to be the boot drive capable according to ASRock.  SATA 1 is a Crucial 500GB SSD, SATA 2 is a 1TB WD 7200 rpm disk drive, SATA 3 is a 1TB WD 7200 rpm disk drive, SATA 4 is open, SATA 5 is my Pioneer Blu Ray burner, SATA 6 is my ASUS DVD burner and the rest of the SATA channels are open.

Now I loaded Windows 10 on the EVO960 M2 drive but it will not boot from there as it says that "An operating system wasn't found".  However, when I push F11 (Boot menu) and select the Crucial SSD on SATA 1 as the boot source, it boots to Win 10 off of the M2 drive.  But there is absolutely nothing on the Crucial SSD that I can see.  What goes with this???

Have a feeling that I need to disconnect all the SATA drives and just load Win 10 onto the EVO960.  Hopefully that will force the boot instructions to be loaded onto the EVO960.

DunGoneNuts, after flashing to the latest BIOS/UEFI (4.41), please report back and describe any problems.  The 960 EVO runs fine as a boot device.  Please be sure to do an F9 and F10 before and after your flash and use only the Instant Flash.  Enjoy, john.

No change.  Flashed to L4.41 and still have to direct to the Crucial SSD for boot from the EVO960.  I am just going to disconnect every SATA device except for the DVD reader  and reload Win 10.  The system will be forced to load everything onto the EVO960.

Update:  Just disconnected  all drives and loaded Win 10 on the M2.  No issues.  Boots correctly now.

The standard way of installing Windows 10 is to have only the installation medium and the destination drive connected. So, yes, try it with all the other storage devices disconnected.

Got it done.  Disconnected all SATA devices except for the DVD reader and loaded Windows 10 directly to the M2 drive with no problems.  I did notice however that using this method resulted in several partitions on the M2 drive that you do not normally get on the SD drives.

Does not matter, as Windows 10 is loaded and operates like it is supposed to.  Now I have to see if I can get my 3600 DDR4 memory to work as advertised.  If I can not get it to play along at 3600, then I am going to revert to my G Skill Flare X 3200 with tighter timings.  Any recommendations as to how I should go about getting the memory to operate at the speed that G Skill says it will work at?
