Hello

I recently assembled my Gaming Rig. I am having a hard time getting Windows 10 to work without crashing.

Here are the steps that I did to troubleshoot my issue

Move the RAM around

Check one of the RAM Dimms out

Flash the BIOS to the latest one from this site

through control panel to check off certain power options

Formatted one of my other storage drives to exfat32

Try to install Ubuntu still fail

Check out the CMOS battery for one minute

Clear the CMOS

Install all drivers updated

Disabled i o u m m

At this point I tried a lot of things but it seems to still be a issue

Is there anyone that's ok and point out some different things that could fix my issue. I have been working on troubleshooting this issue for about a week.

Are there any details of the crash. Meaning is it a blue screen, freeze up, or error messages etc..

Have you tried booting into Linux from USB or running Memtest?

Do you have a power supply tester?

Did Windows install without errors - clean install, right? How about Ubuntu errors?

Since you already tried a lot of things, I would probably swap parts out at this point and test everything one by one in another system, even the CPU if you have access to another X399 board.

Hang in there, you have a great rig and you'll get it running Wink

yes expect for the memtest, but for some reason linux would go through the install process or fully run live.

Did Windows install without errors - clean install, right? How about Ubuntu errors?

windows did install without any errors.

Asfar as ubuntu i get the (initramfs) unable to find counting live file system.I experience this with (ubuntu,12.1,16.4,5.35) ,manjaro, lakka linux

Since you already tried a lot of things, I would probably swap parts out at this point and test everything one by one in another system, even the CPU if you have access to another X399 board.

unfortunatly this is the only working mb and processor that i have.

thanks i just trying to figure out whats really the issue.

" rel="nofollow - Did you use Rufus to make your boot drive with the proper settings for UEFI mode? Have you tried another flash drive and another USB port?

I find it odd that you managed to install Windows, but Ubuntu failed.

https://www.vanstechelman.eu/content/creating-an-uefi-bootable-linux-usb-stick

There's also a newer release: Ubuntu 17.10.1 (this branch was tested with Threadripper on a few sites)

Finally, you can test your PSU with a multimeter if you don't have access to a universal tester (even if you used the unit in a prior system).

Welcome to the forums.

When installing an OS on an X399 system it is best to remove all drives from the system leaving only your OS drive installed. Having other drives connected during the install process causes problems with the installation. This apples to both Windows and Linux.

Another step that would be beneficial is to completely remove all partitions from your OS drive before installing and let windows create and format the partitions it needs. If your other drives are new and have no data on them yet or you can back it up, remove their partitions too then repartition and format them once your OS is installed and updated.

Once your installation is complete and you have updated your drivers and windows you can then install your other drives. Doing all this will completely rule out the OS as the problem. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

One more crucial detail, this must be done with Factory Defaults in your UEFI. Never apply your manual settings before you have installed your OS and the system is stable at defaults. This never used to be as much of an issue but UEFI is getting more and more fiddly as technology gets more complex/advanced.

Good luck.

After trying the steps suggested by Xaltar, if you wish to boot into Ubuntu, you should have 2 USB options in the UEFI Boot menu or the Boot override menu (keep in mind that I have a X370 board):

- USB: SMI USB DISK (for non UEFI flash boot --> this works on my system with Linux Mint)
- UEFI: SMI USB DISK (for UEFI boot --> this was required to load Windows 10 on my system)

The link I provided gives you the steps to make a UEFI USB bootable drive. I always use Rufus and gave up on other tools a long time ago...

For the above reason i tried to install linux because win10 is unstable. However linux is not wanting to installed through either usb or dvd

i next connect my tb2 sshd and format it to exfat32 still i am having issue with installing linux

Installing on ANY chipset, not only X399. Any.

This cannot be stressed enough. Windows makes it a habit to located the swap file to seemingly whatever drive it sees fit when two or more drives are present during installation.

It does no good to install Windows to a fast SSD/M.2 if the swap resides on rotational platters or an otherwise slower drive.

Your symptoms sound suspiciously like incompatible RAM. Please provide the model number of your RAM kit as well as details like 4x4gb or 2x8gb sticks.

It would also be helpful if you could fire up CPUz, click over to the "SPD" tab and select one of your RAM modules from the drop down menu. Take a screen capture and share it here.

That Patriot Kit is very likely Samsung b-die IC's, single rank, single side. Guessing so anyways as it usually the case with high speed mem.

That's still not a compatibility guarantee.

" rel="nofollow - It may not be the issue but the memory is advertised as 1.35v where as 2100 on the board by default is , I think set too (at least on mine), 1.2v. maybe setting the voltage on ram higher? I do know using the XMP on ram should increase it as well. Be careful there though as TR4 AGESA is not as mature a AM4's AGESA.

Update

SORRY for late reply ladies and gents

well, I have discovered in my device manager I see an error code43 by one of my rx480s.

Win 10 seems to run a little bit better, but still, my system locks up and still randomly restarts.

My plan of actions is to trouble the 43 error code with one of my rx480s I hope the card did not die

Update

my gaming rig is still crashing with win 10

As i mentioned before one of my rx480 are giving a error code 43.when i do manage to get the win 10 stable i may try to flash my gpu with an rx580 bios to see if that fix the issue.

I took out the rx480 with the error code and so far it does manage to stay on a little longer.

But still windows still freezes up or produce the BSOD error.

One thing that i kind of overlook was all possible update for win 10.When i went into the updates and security to launch the windows update.I have over 8 updates populate including an update for my rx480.

i was able to install 92% of the updates except for the windows creator v1709,For what ever reason this update refuse to install. Not sure why but i believe that this may play a major part in the inconsisty with win10 being stable

I went into the command prompt and typed in sfc /scannow ,the end results was a message stating that some of the files were courpted and has been fixed.

Still in all windows 10 just loves to crashes win i am doing an download thats over 1.6gb.Not sure whats thats all about.Or the system will freezes up if i leave it on for a long time.I have to restart the computer inorder for it to be responsive.

This is by far the most pain in the A$$ build that i have ever done.I just dont understand it.

If you have a spare drive, maybe try downloading the latest installation media for Windows from MS and install it on a clean drive (with all your others disconnected). Update windows fully before installing any drivers and then install the drivers, chipset first then all others once all updates are complete, see if that gets you stable. That should rule out the OS as the issue if it still won't run stable for you.

Yes thats true once i get win10 and ubuntu install stable and working I will focus more in the bios to get the ram to run at a higher speed other than the 2100mhz that its stays at.

Was up every body I was finally able to fix and stabilize win 10

The fix for the issue was to update the AMD chip set driver from the AMD site. I choose the auto detach device option like I have before.

This time I just choose to update the chipset driver only this time. Once that was done I was able to run many different programs and the Pcsx2 emulator without dancing with the BSOD. Needless to say I am well beyond relieved. So now that challenge is over I can try to see what is wrong with one of my rx480 GPU.

Win 10 creator update was able to install without any issues including all windows update. As mention previously I was catching all hell with the updates doing the right thing without seeing the BSOD.
I haven?檛 been able to fine tune my ram yet as for it still being seen in the bois as only 2100 MHz?檚

The fast startup feature enabled can cause your Windows 10 computer crashing, so make sure to disable fast startup. To do so: 1) Type Control Panel from the search box on your desktop, and click Control Panel to open it. ...
