Subject: Ryzen 2xxx AGESA Code Potential Issues

" rel="nofollow - I decided to upgrade my Taichi X370 from version 3.00 BIOS to 4.60 back in mid March.

A few days later I noticed some problems when attempting to play PUBG with the game constantly crashing on start up or when attempting to go back to the game lobby at the end of a game (on the occasions when it did start). Reading through the PUBG forums over the last month in an attempt to solve the issue, it became evident that a lot of people are now experiencing a similar issue and it appears that predominantly the people suffering the problem are Ryzen users who are running a CPU overclock.

Today I attempted to solve the problem by returning my Ryzen 1700 back to default clocks while retaining the RAM overclock @ 3466 MHz and the problem disappeared.

Doing some more reading, it appears that a lot of Ryzen users are experiencing issues with a number of games of late, with reports of PUBG, Battlefield1, Battlefront and War Thunder suffering a number of problems with audio and game crashes. Given the timing of these issues all seem to be new with a lot of users having issues particularly with the newer Ryzen 2xxx series CPUs, I decided to revert my BIOS back to version 3.00 to see whether my issues with PUBG remained when overclocking the CPU; they didn't.

This leads me to think that there is potentially an issue with the AGESA code currently being rolled out for the Ryzen 2xxx series that will become more apparent when the newer CPU release later this month.

Is anyone else experiencing any similar issues with the newer BIOS versions that support the new 2xxx CPUs?

i cant help with any experiance with the later ryzen 2 bios

ive stuck with 3.1 for a while now as i find its working very well for me

i think it needs a bit of time under the belt so to speak with the new agesa to mature

Thanks for the reply datonyb.

Yes, it's early days for the new AGESA code and Ryzen 2xxx, so it's understandable that there will be some teething issues. It's just a shame that the newer AGESA versions seem to affect AMD's first generation CPU adversely.

I did notice that some people with Coffee Lake CPUs were also suffering a similar issue with PUBG, so maybe both new CPU families are doing something similar in their processing that is causing the problem. Time will no doubt tell.

PUBG is a badly coded game, its not Intel and AMD's fault there, its just the developers fault, poorly written code can only be fixed by the developers.

Pretty sure it is AMD's fault (see: https://forums.battlefield.com/en-us/discussion/99778/audio-cutouts-on-ryzen-overclock-on-bf1-bf4-swbf-inquisition" rel="nofollow - https://forums.battlefield.com/en-us/discussion/99778/audio-cutouts-on-ryzen-overclock-on-bf1-bf4-swbf-inquisition ).

If I had known Ryzen systems would be riddled with so many glaring bugs a year after it's release, I would have stuck with Intel. This has been a nightmare; having to wait for a UEFI update to see if it fixes things we've taken for granted from Intel for a decade. Maybe ASRock is at fault and not AMD. I don't have another system to contrast it with.

While I agree wholeheartedly that PUBG is a badly coded game, in this particular instance there is definitely an issue with the AGESA code for the Pinnacle Ridge CPUs pertaining to what appears to be core assignment on start up.

The problem appears to be with the AGESA code itself, so not an ASRock issue, as there are reports of other manufacturer's motherboards running the latest AGESA version (Pinnacle Ridge) having the same issue.

I personally wouldn't be holding AMD over a fire for this, I believe they are actually doing a great job. Intel has had years to fine tune their Core architecture while Zen has only been in the consumer domain for just on 12 months. Every new architecture has teething issues.

and as much to blame game coders have been writing for intel and nvidia combinations for the last 10 years.................now the market is showing strong buyers and users of the zen cores they have to learn how to make it work

maybe once again im trouble free as i just smash the be-jesus out of tanks on WOT, im not playing any other titles

I see, well thanks for providing the link, upon searching the webs its seems indeed there are audio cutout issues on some Ryzen systems and some games, AGESA 1.0.0.2a was released this month so ASRock AM4 boards are two AGESA versions behind the latest one available, currently latest UEFI's provide AGESA PinnaclePI 1.0.0.1a, then we have PinnaclePI 1.0.0.2 and PinnaclePI 1.0.0.2a

I can confirm the PUBG crash since Pinnacle AGESA (4.xx versions on Taichi).

And you cant blame PUBG devs for this one. The crash is inside the Unreal Engine code.
I think it appeared after PUBG updated its Unreal Engine version some weeks ago.
Seems like Epic doesn't test their Engine on overclocked AMD CPUs with bleeding edge BIOS :P

I hope this is fixed in the new released AGESA versions and ASRock will release a new BIOS soon.

I had a similar issue with games from Wargaming (World of Tanks and Warships)

As soon as I tried to change the multiplier at all, I would have issues with both games.

The only way I could continue to use my overclock with those games was to set the CPU overclocking to auto and use the Ryzen Master application.

can i ask why you dont revert back to bios version 3.1 or 3.2 then

I wasn't aware that we could roll back to 3.3 or 3.31 due to the AGESA changes, and by the time i figured it out I had already decided that I would be getting a 2700x so I felt that I would live with the annoyances until my CPU is delivered.

Cheers,

Chris

Keen to hear how the 2700x goes with the same BIOS and whether the problem still exists. Please let us know.

" rel="nofollow - I think a lot of these issues are being blown out of proportion.
Performance increases have reached a ceiling via BIOS uodates, so if things are working as they should why is everyone so fixated on updating their BIOS?
Only update BIOS if there's a feature or fix that applies to your usecase.
Both my Ryzen platforms are functioning well on earlier BIOS.
The person who said they're going to deal with the issues until their new CPU is delivered is going to "find issues" with that setup as well BC the new CPUs are limited on the X370 chipset.
I'm pleased with the pre-bridge BIOS releases, there won't be any substantial benefits to upgrading to a newer BIOS on the X370 platform other than possible improved memory support.
I'm talking compatibility, not overclocking.
Like I said above I think we've reached the ceiling for this platform, and there's nothing wrong with that, just enjoy your hardware ???forumCodes=True

Nothing is limited on X370 for Ryzen 2xxx, some boards with A320/B350 will have XFR2.0 disabled maybe lower XFR range depending on the manufacturer, but ASRock has unlocked all features for Ryzen 2xxx with all X370 boards and latest UEFI, and that isn't even a offcial UEFI for 2xxx

If people are expecting something to change from X370 to X470 they will be deeply disapointed its the same chipset just rebranded, all changes are in the UEFI between X370 and X470 (but ASRock will use exactly the same UEFI for X370 and X470), its made on a smaller fab node that should decrease power consumption and thats it, no other changes, so the performance will be exactly the same between X370 and X470

Ryzen 1xxx indeed has reached its full potential, but the 2xxx series including Raven Ridge has a long way to go

"XFR 2.0 Enhanced" will not be enabled on X370 boards.
So for those not overclocking this will be a hindrance.

I can enable XFR2.0 on my X370 ITX/ac with my Ryzen 2400G, there I can also set the CPU Current Limits and GPU overclock settings
Anyhow, if ASRock won't remove these settings with the next UEFI update, there is no difference between X370 and X470 on ASRock boards, but you are right, most manufacturers have locked settings in UEFI for B350 and even X370, ASRock did not lock or hide any settings.
I know for a fact that Asus removed/renamed the XFR2.0 setting in the latest UEFI for the Crosshair VI...

Have you tried the XFR2 setting? I assume it is just enable/disable. and the GPU setting? I was under the impression that the 2400 was pretty bad at overclocking in general for the GPU, and the 2200 vvega 8  was much better

I have not tried the XFR because the values are in HEX I think, yes its just enabled/disable for the function, and you can set the power limits (those are the actual XFR 2.0 settings), and not documented, but I have tested the CPU up to 4150MHz with 1.45V, and the GPU up to 1650 with 1.25V, I can pass IntelBurnTest @ 4150MHz with maximum stress setting 10 passes, and the GPU I have played CS:GO for about 5-6 hours straight @ 1650MHz with no problems.
My opinion is that it overclocks ok, both the GPU and CPU part, but the actual procedure is not that straight forward in UEFI plus you loose the adaptive frequency/voltage scaling when idle, I tried with P-State but you also lose some of the power states, so for now I just run stock with turbo disabled because of the throttle bug when turbo is enabled, maybe next UEFI will fix it.

PS: you also loose the GPU adaptive frequency when you overclock it, instead of downclocking the GPU will stay at 1650MHz even in idle, and thats not good, until they fix these bugs better without OC

There's XFR 2.0 and XFR 2.0 enhanced.
They're different.
Please have a look at AMD.

I too have these same problems with PUBG and BF1.  I started a dialogue with ASRock Support about 4.60 for Taichi.  I have better stability on 4.60 compared to 3.20 overclocked.  But, 4.60 does not play well with these two applications and a few other things, like 3.20 does.  Hopefully this gets resolved soon.

I will try to explain again:  XFR 2.0 (the enhanced part means its configurable tru' UEFI) will work on all X370 boards with Ryzen 2xxx CPU if the manufacturer of the board did not lock/disable/hide the option on porpouse, in case of ASRock they did leave the option enabled fully, so its enabled and configurable. Asus on the other hand removed/renamed the option, so did Gigabyte as far as I understand. Its just for marketing purpose because on the high end side there is 0 difference between X370 and X470, you need to understand that its the same silicone just made on a newer fab node for lower TDP, there is no additional logic vs X370, all "new" functions of X470 where added to X370 by ASRock with a UEFI update

EDIT: It seems ASRock (I hope temporary) is not listing the 2700X as compatible with the Fatality X370 ITX/ac and Fatality AB350 ITX/ac, for some unknown reason, all other X370 boards do list the 2700X, if they indeed do not certify the 2700X on these two boards its just because they released the X470 ITX/ac and this is called planned obsolence that the UE Commision is not very fond of

No, I don't think so. More likely it's just an omission. I haven't checked the X370 ITX but on the Specification page for the B350 ITX under CPU it says:

"Supports 105W Water Cooling (Pinnacle Ridge); Supports 95W Water Cooling (Summit Ridge); Supports 65W Water Cooling (Raven Ridge)"

New beta UEFI/BIOS updates were released that include AGESA version PinnaclePI-AM4_1.0.0.3b, and it seems to resolve the audio problem in Battlefield 1. That's the case for my ASRock AB350 Pro4 with UEFI/BIOS version 4.73A/PinnaclePI-AM4_1.0.0.3b, atleast.

According to this guy on Overclock.net, 1.0.0.3b has been available for at least two weeks now, so hopefully it is 1.0.0.3b being used by ASRock:
