Subject: Z170 Extreme7+ bad memory slots?

Hi, I bought this board off of newegg and any time I put memory into the first two DIMM slots A0 and A1 the board gives error 55 "cannot read memory". I can use the same memory in any other slots and the board works fine. I've tried two sets of memory with the same results.

Are these slots bad and should I RMA? Or is there anything else I can try? The memory I'm using is G.Skill Ripjaws V PC4-25600 DDR4-3200 CL 16-18-18-38 1.35v XMP 2.0. Thanks.

Is your memory the G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-8GVK model?

The A1 and A2 slots are the channel A slots. It seems that channel A is having the problem. For dual channel operation, two DIMMs should be mounted in slots A2 and B2.

Did you try clearing the UEFI/BIOS after changing the memory slots being used?

Bent pins in the CPU socket can cause the problem you have. Also, a CPU cooler that is over tightened on the socket can cause it too.

Pins from the DIMM slot shorting on something like the mother board tray, etc, is also a possible cause.

But it is possible that the channel A DIMM slots are defective.

So both of the DIMMs work in the B channel?

I've tried both G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-8GVK (Dual channel) and G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-8GVKB (Quad channel), both say they should work with Z170 boards.

I have tried clearing the BIOS after changing memory slots. All of the sticks of memory (8 of them) work individually in both B slots, but if any memory is in one of the A slots I get error 55 (even with only one DIMM installed).

I will try resetting the CPU, but yes both B slots are working fine, the computer is running normally (I'm using it to write this post) with 16GB (8x2) installed in the B slots, running in single-channel mode.

I did try to reseating the CPU and updated BIOS to the latest version from Sep 2 2015, still no luck with any memory working in bank A.
