" rel="nofollow - Hi, I have a new Taichi X399M with a Ryzen 2990WX. When I load it up with all cores singing, the VR Temp jumps to 123C and the board locks up requiring a power off. No overclocking.

The CPU temp stays in the 70'sC. I have Enermax Liquid cooling 320mm and I strong fan on the VR heatsink. Running latest BIOS -- do I have a bad board? What temps are you seeing on your VR.

BTW: I measure the VR Temp using A-Tuning. Thanks

" rel="nofollow - super hot vr is a nice game ;)

i think you mean VRM temps (=power delivery)?

i see you water cool, do you have good case air flow? maybe point a fan on the cpu socket to blow away some heat, just to see if low airflow arround the socket is the problem?

I have lots of airflow on VR chips and heat pipe

temps go crazy when I am using more then 3/4 of cores. I ordered a replacement.

Just for my own curiosity, what thermal compound are you using? Also, are the CPU temps you're reporting here Tdie or Tctrl and what is the limit for the 2990wx? The 2950X is Tdie 68c / Tctrl 95c so I am curious how that chip compares.

even without a heatsink it should reach over 60C

I don't have a 2990wx but with my 2950x on an X399 Phantom Gaming 6 my VRM temps go up to 70c MAX when under full load (32 threads 100% use). Even then, 70c is a brief spike, average temp under full load is about 64c according to ASRock ATuning.

If you are hitting 100c and above then return the board, the VRM heatsink mounting is probably damaged. This can happen with rough handling, usually in transit.

As for CPU temps, the 70c reading is taken from Tdie which should be offset by -27c to get your actual CPU temp. 70c Tdie = 43c TCtl. It had me panicking with my 2950x when I saw temps reported in the 90s in A-Tuning during stress testing. As it turns out, A-Tuning reports TDie not TCtl so I was worried for nothing.
