When I turn off csm and select usb uefi partition as my boot device I get an error the the efi/microsoft/boot/bcd has an error.
I have created the usb twice and get the error each time. I need to boot in uefi mode but there seems to be a bug. |

And the error I'm getting is:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause to fix this problem: 1 insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer 2 choose your language settings and then click Next 3 click Repair your computer If you do not have this disc contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File:\efi\microsoft\boot\bcd Status: 0x000000d Info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data |

3 times I've tried now with new usb sticks. Each time same error.
Funny thing is the windows disc this is made from boots fine in uefi but I don't have a keyboard or mouse which is problematic. Edited by TimH - 07 Nov 2015 at 1:57pm |

Still getting the error. I just tried RUFUS to create the UEFI USB installation drive from the win 7 patcher. Next I'm going to try rufus to create the UEFI stick from the installation CD and see if it does a better job than the USB patcher. If it does then I may copy the .wim file from the patched CD to the new Stick and see if that's all I need to do to get USB support.
Meanwhile has anyone gotten a Patched USB stick to boot in UEFI mode?

Okay I tried using the BCD from the installation disk and that didn't work. Here is the BCD data but I don't see any problems
Windows Boot Manager -------------------- identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795} description Windows Boot Manager locale en-US inherit {7ea2e1ac-2e61-4728-aaa3-896d9d0a9f0e} default {7619dcc9-fafe-11d9-b411-000476eba25f} displayorder {7619dcc9-fafe-11d9-b411-000476eba25f} timeout 30 Windows Boot Loader ------------------- identifier {7619dcc9-fafe-11d9-b411-000476eba25f} device ramdisk=[boot]\sources\boot.wim,{7619dcc8-fafe-11d9-b411-000476eba25f} path \windows\system32\boot\winload.efi description Windows Setup locale en-US inherit {6efb52bf-1766-41db-a6b3-0ee5eff72bd7} osdevice ramdisk=[boot]\sources\boot.wim,{7619dcc8-fafe-11d9-b411-000476eba25f} systemroot \windows detecthal Yes winpe Yes ems Yes But not being aware of what it should look like I can see no reason why ASUS BIOS 1.7 wouldn't like this BCD

Okay if no one sees a problem with above I will have to conclude that the board does not support booting UEFI from a USB yet. It appears to be a BIOS problem as it does boot from the CD in UEFI without the above error.
I will create a patch DVD to install windows 7 from. Hopefully that will do it.

All right that didn't work either. I think the Patcher is the problem.
I used the patcher to create a Patched ISO of Win7 64bit and I burned it to the DVD. I put it in the computer and the Z170 Formula OC wouldn't recognize it as a UEFI boot disk. I put the original in and the Z170 Formula OC recognized it as a VALID UEFI boot disk. So something is going wrong in the Patcher. I have version 2.0.5

One thing I did notice is that the Original installation disk Win7 64, had no {boot} folder under efi only {microsoft} folder. the created USB and ISO both had a boot directory with a file bootx64.efi or something like that. Not sure if that extraneous folder and file is what is messing up the boot.
