Hej Guys

I experience some problems, updating my new "out of the box" H170 Performance Mainboard.
No matter if i try to flash the BIOS by Windows, UEFI Instant Flash or UEFI Internet Flash, the PC results in hanging on different locations.

My current FW is 1.20.

Flashing by Windows: The Computer restarts, but then is hanging at start, showing the "to enter BIOS press F2 or delete" message and showing me the current (old) BIOS-Version. Only way to pass this, is removing the battery.

Flashing by Instantflash: After selecting the ROM and confirm the question if i want to update UEFI to \H17Perf1.60 (P1.60)?, the PC keeps hanging, doing nothing at all. Ctrl/alt/del and it restarts as if nothing happened.

Flashing by Internet Flash: Its able to find the Firmware version 1.60 and i check update. It starts downloading the firmware, but then fails with message "Internet connection error!". The PC then keeps hanging, like it does by trying to flash by Instantflash. Ctrl/alt/del and it restarts as if nothing happened.
I already have a Windows 10 up and running and Internet is totally fine so far.

Any ideas?

Just managed to fix it. Entered the network configuration and changed it from "Auto" to "Europe". It then downloaded and installed the firmware and everything worked.

Strange that nothing else worked...

For safety sake always use Instant Flash.

THEN THERE WAS SOMETHING IN THE METHOD YOU USED THAT CAUSED THIS.

INSTANT FLASH DOES INDEED WORK WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH IT.

lol

1. That was exactly my question: what caused this issue? If you can't help, please leave it to someone that can and want to.

2. Instead of guessing, I don't know what i do, just ask for specific things you think I might doing wrong. Thats exactly what a good technican would do.

3. I'm working as IT-Technican since ages and  I highly doubt that you flashed nearly the same amount of BIOS and UEFI as I did. So please, don't troll around. I know what I do and I know if something is going wrong, that shouldn't.

So I'm going to ask you: Do you have any clou why anything I posted, didn't work? I'm still interested in why it didn't work. Because I  surely took the right ROM and Instant Flash just crashed, while it worked with Internet Flash with the same ROM after i set the region to 'Europe'. In my opinion, this could be an issue with the board and if so, I'd like to know that so I could ask the reseller for a replacement.

Your symptoms sound like either you downloaded the wrong BIOS update for your board or the one on ASRock's product page was somehow corrupt or incorrect. The fact that it updated correctly via internet flash would indicate that it is not a hardware fault. Far more likely some kind of corruption/incorrect model number of the original BIOS updates you downloaded. I am not saying you downloaded the wrong ones, only that it is possible that they somehow got corrupted or the wrong ones were on your product page.

If the board is functioning correctly now then you have nothing to worry about.

Thank you for your response.

When I flashed by Windows, I did this using the ASRock-App. It selected the ROM by itself and I just started the download/installation. The result was stucking in the Post-Screen as mentioned in my first post.

So the only thing I think might have gone wrong on my side is, that our company-firewall somehow corrupted the file by scaning it. That would leave a small chance that this wasn't the case when I flashed by Internet Flash, if the file then was downloaded from another source or encrypted, so the firewall wasn't able to access it.

Anyway, the board so far works fine and I don't have any issues beside that. If a new BIOS-Version is released, I can try to compare if the same happens again and then download the file again from another network, not protected by a professional firewall.

Tank you!

There is a beta BIOS available for your board that adds the DDR4 overclocking feature to your H170 based board. As far as I am aware is is identical in every other way to the latest release version. If you have higher frequency DDR4 installed and are unable to run it at spec then you may want to take a look at it, if not then I wouldn't bother with it given your system is working as it should be.

I generally only update my BIOS when I absolutely have to. Despite many years in the IT field and never having had an update go wrong I still get nervous watching the progress bar LOL
