hi asrock,
have a h170 fatality performance here, that, when i launch it, takes quite some time to start / spin up the cpu fan. when i look at it the cpu fan starts already to move in steps, but only slightly, before it really starts spinning. it seems to only start after a certain temperature (30-40°) or time has been reached, maybe 3-5 seconds. is this behaviour normal or does the cpu fan have to start immediately when powering up? bios version is 2.00. cpu is i3 6320. thank you. related: https://communities.intel.com/thread/103077

Sounds like you are using the stock Intel CPU cooler supplied with Skylake processors. If you check the label on the fan, do you see NIDEC on it? You might notice that I'm the person that started that thread in Intel's forum. The result where the Intel person wrote "... glad my CPU cooler is working now", is not what the result actually is. We learned the NIDEC made CPU coolers for Skylake processors have problems, whether Intel acknowledges that or not. Intel sent me one of their Skylake CPU coolers, but not the NIDEC made version. The one they sent me works fine, but anyone with the NIDEC made CPU cooler has the same problem you do. It is NOT normal for the Intel CPU cooler, or ANY fan on a CPU cooler to act the way yours does. The ONLY four pin PWM fan on a CPU cooler that behaves as yours does is the NIDEC made fan on Intel Skylake CPU coolers. The CPU cooler's fan should start spinning as soon as the PC starts. No one has any problems with any other four pin PWM fans connected to the CPU fan header on their ASRock boards. The only problems with CPU cooler fans on ASRock Skylake boards, is the NIDEC made, stock Intel CPU cooler. ASRock added an option in the UEFI/BIOS for their Skylake boards (like yours) to try to fix the problem with the NIDEC made coolers. Your board's 2.00 UEFI version, and newer versions, have that option, called CPU Fan Type. Setting that option to 4 Pin improves the operation of the NIDEC made CPU cooler, but it is still not 100% normal. My suggestion to you is, contact Intel and request a new CPU cooler. If the replacement cooler is not a NIDEC model, it will work fine. |

yeah, thought so. many thanks. its a nidec, i actually have two of those here. >.<
found the option in the bios, it improves it a little bit, but still not working as intended. i filled the support form out on intels website already, but after that i get prompted to a login page when i do neither have registered or received a username or password. any ideas what to do? do you believe these nidec fans can lead to cpu damage or something?

Two of them, oh you are so lucky. ![]() If you had access to any Intel CPU cooler that is designed to work with any of their socket 115x processors (Haswell, Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge), they would fit on your Skylake board and work fine. About CPU damage, if the fan on that cooler did not spin at all, which is normally not what happens, the CPU could over heat, but it will shut off by itself before it is permanently damaged. That is not something you want to happen more than once or twice. Never would be the best. About the support form, you need to create an account with Intel, simply as a forum user. While I have an account, when I tried to use the support form, it never worked for me. That was months ago, they seem to still have problems with it. I suspect the ad blocking program I use with my Internet browser might cause the problem, but I'm not sure. You do need to create the forum account, that I am sure of. I had to deal with Intel with email messages, the forum support person emailed me, with the information in the forum account I have. You could also try their on line "chat" option, I've never used it. |

thread in intel forum was advanced to support ticket. nice.
btw my retailer told me hes also out of old fans, so maybe theres almost only nidecs around these days. hopefully intel still has some good ones on their supplies. Edited by soulstealer - 01 Oct 2016 at 10:34pm |
