Hi, I've recently built a new computer (Win7-64) and everything was fine, had internet connection etc. I came back yesterday morning & internet connection was suddenly gone? Modem/router had disconnected itself, so I reconnected and now I have internet wi-fi ok but still no broadband on my desktop PC?
Diagnostics suggests there is no link to the network adapter, ie the ethernet cable is faulty? So I tried another cable and still the same problem? I'm pretty sure the motherboard's ethernet port is fine (mobo is brand new). It doesn't light up, but when I run the LAC "Identify Adaptor" diagnostic it starts blinking, so I assume it is ok? Would a faulty cable cause the port not to light up? It could be that both my ethernet cables are faulty perhaps? Should I buy a 3rd one & try it? Also in Device Manager nothing is highlighted, the network adapter & drivers are installed ok etc. What should I do? I'm tearing my hair out with this! It's a brand new build & was performing excellently until yesterday!? Thanks in advance -- :) |

I would try connecting the system to another device other than the modem/router to rule them out as the issue. By the sound of it though, I would guess the fuse on the LAN port has blown (power surge through the LAN cable).
This kind of thing is usually caused by lightening somewhere along your cable line, have there been any storms in your area lately?

Thanks Xaltar, but could it be the fuse if it still blinks when I go LAC/Properties "Configure"/Link Speed/Identify Adaptor?
There's been no storms here btw. I have yet to try another modem. I'm ready to give up & start a fresh new Win7 install. PITA after spending days installing tweaking all my apps & settings & stuff. Gah! |

Don't do a fresh install. Sounds like your modem went belly up. Test with another to verify. |

I'm with Wardog here. Either the modem died or the LAN port did, either way software won't help. The fuse does not effect the LEDs. The fuse is in line with the cable and designed to stop power surges reaching more sensitive components. A blown fuse means the cable is unable to transmit signals, the LAN controller itself is still working even with blown fuses so indicator LEDs and diagnostics would still pass. Hopefully that isn't the case as there is little that can be done about it. The fuses are not replaceable, at least not without the skills of an electronics expert and a pro soldering rig.
Try another modem first (that is the more likely culprit) then get back to us.

OK will do, I'm borrowing a friend's modem tomorrow. I appreciate your responses, you guys. I'll post back my results.
I'm hoping it's the modem? Because the motherboard is brand new! Anyway I suppose I could just add a PCI network card if it's the motherboard's LAN port, right? Anyway try a different modem first... Thanks again! :) |

The LEDs are Activity LED and Connection LED, both require a signal so no, if the modem's LAN port is toast there wouldn't be any LEDs lighting up.
Connecting the patch lead (LAN cable) from your PC to say a laptop should give you a Connection LED. It won't allow data transfer but it is useful to see if the port is dead.

What do you see in the Device Manager entry for the Intel I218V networking chip?
If you have the Intel networking driver installed, there are diagnostic tests that can be run. What does the Windows Network and Sharing Center say about that Internet connection? You can run the Troubleshooter and see what the result is. |
