I just bought 2x8 ddr4 3600mhz for my pc. The mobo is asrock z170m extreme4. It says It can run with 1 stick 3466+ and 2 lower. I got it to boot with the one stick and wanted to downclock the second. But I can't get it to boot with both sticks so don't get the chance to downclock it.

I tried resetting cmos with no sticks in, with 2 sticks in. and the one I got closest was with one in and then changing ram to auto and setting frequency to 3466, but with no boot when I plugged the second in.

Is there any way to do this or do I have to take em back and get two 3466?

What is the full model name and number of your memory?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by, " I got it to boot with the one stick and wanted to downclock the second".

It seems you are saying you want to run the two sticks of memory at different speeds, is that right? You are thinking about down clocking the second stick, correct?

If that is correct, I'm sorry but there is no way to do that. All the memory in a mother board must run at the same speed. There is no method or way to set the speed of each stick by itself. That is a limitation of the memory controller, that is part of the CPU.

Or if you mean you just want to run both sticks at a speed lower than 3600, yes you can do that. You won't need to get lower speed memory to do that. Using lower speed memory won't help. But you will need to set the memory speed manually, instead of using the XMP profile, which sets the memory speed automatically.

You may not be able to get two 8GB sticks to run at 3466, but you can adjust the memory speed as high as possible.

First, put both sticks in the A1 and B1 slots. That usually works better when using 8GB sticks. Then reset the CMOS/UEFI, start the PC and go into the UEFI/BIOS and reset any non-default option settings you use, but don't change any of the memory settings. Save and exit the UEFI, boot into Windows and check that all your memory (16GB) is detected. The memory will be running at its default speed, which is probably 2133. That will prove both sticks of memory are working.

Next, go into the UEFI/BIOS, and go the the DRAM Configuration screen. Do not change the Load XMP Setting option. Find the DRAM Tweaker feature, and click on that.

Find the column for the 3600 speed settings. Click/check every item in the list, but do NOT check the 3600 speed item. Click Apply and go back to the DRAM Configuration screen.

Find the DRAM Frequency option. Select a memory speed such as 2866 or 3000 for a start.

Then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the DRAM Configuration screen, and find the MRC Fast Boot option. Set it to Disabled. That will cause memory training to happen when the PC starts, which helps with memory stability.

Go back to the OC Tweaker screen, and open the Voltage Configuration screen. Check that the DRAM Voltage is set to 1.35V, if it isn't change it to 1.35V. Then Save and Exit the UEFI/BIOS, and hopefully the PC will boot into Windows.

If Windows boots at 2866 or 3000, use the PC for a while to test for stability. If it seems fine, you can then try to increase the memory speed one step at a time, and check if Windows boots.

If Windows does not boot at 2866 or 3000, your memory might not be completely compatible with a Skylake system.

Let us know what happens if you try this, and include the model number of your memory.
