Hi There,

I'm new to ASRock and new to the forum.

I'm in Canada

I am wanting to buy an ASRock x370 taichi and a Ryzen 7 1800x. Both are currently on sale here but I need to move fairly quickly. Like today. The sale ends at midnight.

My question is regarding compatible DDR4 memory. Because memory is so expensive right now, I'm wondering about the possibility of buying 32GB now and adding another identical 32GB kit later, to make 64GB total.  I've never been on the X370 platform before. I'm coming from an Intel system with DDR3 where I had fairly good luck adding duplicates of identical kits.

I'm viewing the memory QVL list for the X370 taichi motherboard here:
https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X370%20Taichi/index.asp#Memory

If I sort by size and view the 16GB Module's, the DIMM Socket Support column shows 2 and 2/4. I'm not quite sure I understand this. If I just look at 2/4 supported modules does it mean that I could use 2 or 4 of that particular stick? If so, that would lead me to believe I actually could start with 2, then add 2 later.  Am I reading that right?

Has anyone had any experience with this? If so, any recommendations. I don't need or want RGB. This is a closed editing rig. I'm currently maxing 32 GB on current 4K editing projects, then splitting them to continue editing,  which is why I'm wanting to go 64GB.

Any advice appreciated.
Thank you

2/4 seems to imply they checked with 2 sticks and with 4 sticks

what i do know is you have less chance of higher speeds with all 4 sticks than with two

what i also know is the qvl is quite outdated in respect to the ability to run the ram better

e.g. the bios are better now than they were and ram problems are less frequent

the taichi has always also been one of the better boards to support ram smoothly with am4

from launch i have run non qvl ram and i run it overclocked

im guessing your more concerned with ram size than speeds though

Well if that's the case then if I look at one of the entries as an example:
DDR4  HyperX  2400  16GB  HX424C12PB3K2/32   Hynix M-die  DS  2/4

... you know from the size (16GB) and the module  # ending in 32 that it's a 32GB kit, confirmed by checking it out on Newegg.ca. So that particular entry is 2 x 16GB for 32GB total, and if what you're speculating on the 2/4 is true, then in order to check out 4 sticks they'd have to have doubled up the kit. You follow my logic?

And that's just one entry. There are several entries that follow that pattern of being 2 x 16GB total 32GB KITs that have the 2/4 DIMM Socket Support designation.

For the moment I'm just trying to establish whether or not I can do what I'm hoping to do. If board stability has gotten better it would certainly bode well for doubling up a kit.

For me the priorities in order of importance right now would be:
- ability to double up a 32GB kit to make 64GB (so that I could make it in two purchases)
- related to that is price. I'm trying to stay under $500 CAD for a 32 GB kit which if you know current Canadian RAM prices you'll know is a challenge. After 11% tax pushes a $500 purchase to mid $500 CAD. However there are kits to be found in the $430 to $500 CAD range.
- Compatibility, related to the above parameters
- And yes the priority is capacity
- Speed & CL are bonuses, but not the priority
- Lastly, RGB. Id' prefer ti didn't have it.

Worst case scenario I buy the CPU and the mobo on sale now, and wait another six weeks until I can save $1100 + for a 64GB kit. I do have a current rig

EDIT: I'm a mid 50's yo editor, had rigs since the mid 80's I didn't think I'd see the day when I'd say 64GB RAM kit and $1100 in the same sentence. My current 4 x 8GB - 32GB DDR3 kit was ~ $250 CAD

This is what I plan to do...if I need to.

I only have 32GB RAM, compared to most who run 16GB.  It's Flare x 2400MHz, so I was punting on compatibility and  less troubles, being my first build.  The price for 64GB was pretty much double, +/- an odd GBP £.  I questioned whether I'd really need that kind of RAM at the moment (no, 32GB is fine for  general Photoshop, HD 1080 video editing and whatever).

Seeing as the QVL is mostly about an earlier AGESA, and thing improve all the time, I'd say even non-identical DIMMs should be fine.  Really I'd stick to 2x of the same time to add on later, rather than a hickle-de-pickle-de odd DIMM here/there thing.

I don't expect much more than 2400MHz out of the system though.  Most folks who push the RAM speed and aim for more performance from the Infinity-Fabric aren't running huge amounts of RAM.

One question to ask yourself is that would Quad Channel memory work better for you?  It seems the Threadripper series support quad channel RAM.

The RGB crap can be turned off.  I doubt you'll find a board without it.  The glass-side-panel case brigade want pretty colours.  Rest assured the x370 TaiChi is one of the crappiest RGB lighting boards around for the price, if you don't care, like myself, all good.

The only other board that I would entertain for a stable, strong and well built system is the ASUS Crosshair VI (also known as CH6), but the ASRock TaiChi offered more SATA, and a lot less stupid disable-function ASMedia chips which won for me.

How is the second-hand/used market for DIMMS where you are?  You could buy MoBo and CPU now and some lonely 8GB DIMM now or such and sell on later, to put in a lot more RAM.

I'm only 33, and I share similar desired.  No frills, solid and reliable performance, stability.  I couldn't give much of a hoot if they'd not even painted the PCB and left it green like in the good/bad old days of computing.  It goes in a case, with the side on.  I don't look at the expensive stuff I bought.  I just want it to work....and for some daft reason I stuck with Windows....

All the best with your choices and purchases

Edit: I had an old Amiga 1200AGA, with 2MB of RAM and a 68020 CPU.  I added an 16MB + 68030 40MHz CPU expansion board, and things were real dandy.  Couple dot a 256MB HDD, I never ran outm of resources.

Come to today and I have more ram than my old Amiga could dream of in HDD space!  It's laughable.  Look at smart phones and such.

Give it a few more years and more people will begin to question whether we are really living beings in a real sense, or actually a simulation of a past real universe, and we are only slowly getting to the point where we simulate our species and loop it all over again....now that stuff will make people go insane!
