Wardog is correct.
The Z97 chipset is almost identical to the Z87 chipset, the problem is the almost bit. That slight change is what is needed to support Broadwell at a hardware level. There will never be a BIOS update that will allow Broadwell on a series 8 chipset due to the physical incompatibility.
