Thanks Potech, I couldn't believe I stumbled upon your solution to my computers sleep problem by investigating the USB Generic USB Superspeed Hub error message. I had searched everywhere on the forums and couldn't find a solution. Disconnecting the bundled front panel USB 3.1 solved a bunch of my problems.

My first Asrock motherboard and not that happy with the problems I've encountered so far.

Yeah, maybe de-powering the board causes it to do a full post. Smile Good to know the front panel works as I was thinking of installing it but was also thinking of adding a 512G m.2 if I would see more drive performance. But I can only do one or the other Confused

I recently tried the USB 3.1 front panel with my Z170 Extreme7+ board. I had a good experience with it.

I don't recall a longer POST/startup time, but any additional device will cause more POST tests to be run. Plus being USB 3.1, they might be different and take longer to complete.

I did not try the USB 3.0 front panel ports, but the ones on the IO panel worked fine with the USB 3.1 front panel in place and connected.

I tested a USB 3.1 flash drive I purchased recently, and had some good benchmark results with it. I'm not on that PC now, so will need to upload those another time.

clubfoot, I have no idea what cycling the dual BIOS switch would do. The power cycling may have done something similar to a UEFI/BIOS clear.

Speaking of which, I cleared the UEFI/BIOS before starting the board again after installing the USB 3.1 panel. Any hardware change like that should include a BIOS clear/reset, at least IMO.

I also do not use the ASRock front panel however, I do use the usb front panel from my Corsair case. I have also had the issue in device manager on a fresh install of Windows 10. The way I fixed the detection issue (after installing the latest chipset and IME drivers) was to power off, unplug the power supply and cycle the dual BIOS switch. It may just be the act of removing power from the motherboard,....but it has worked every time so far.

Extreme 7+ Strange behavior USB3 header.

Hi all,

I recently bought a Extreme7+ mb to host my i7 processor and m.2 drives. Installation went perfectly and all is running smoothly. However I experience strange behavior with the USB3 sockets. I bought also the Enermax ECR501 card-reader, for the USB3 card-reader part. However when I plugin the 19 pin plug before booting and let the MB handle all, the card-reading part doesn?™t work. Got also an error in the device manager.

The odd thing I noticed, when I started the machine without connecting the cardreader, and when Win10 was booted connecting the cable, the card-reading part was working perfectly!!!!

After reboot same thing. Exclamation mark in device-manager (Win10) on the USB (high-speed) controller. And the card-reader was not working anymore??

I did change some settings like legacy USB (disabled, enables, Uefi boot only) Nothing worked. I also updated the Bios to 3.0, also not the solution.

I?™m a bit puzzled right now

Who can help me out???

I own this board, but have never tried to use the USB 3.1 front panel and USB 3.1 functionality. That is, besides verifying it shares resources with the Ultra M.2 ports.

I'll need to do some configuration changes in order to try it out and see how it works. I use Win 10 too.

Potential reasons for your problems are the lack of a Windows 10 specific driver from ASMedia, or the ASMedia driver itself. Plus new technology having early adopter issues... Intel, give us a USB 3.1 chip and driver please!

Sorry to say, my faith in ASMedia has been ruined by their driver for their SATA chipset. That is from past experience with them on other boards, as well as this one. We may be seeing more of the same here too.

You said your USB 3.0 front panel header fails when the USB 3.1 front panel is connected, correct? Those USB 3.0 headers are provided by an ASMedia 1074 "Hub" according to the specs. I'm not sure if this hub is working with any of the Intel chipset resources, or is a stand alone USB 3.0 resource.

What does the entry in Device Manager for this device provide in the way of driver information when using Win 10? Do you see any trouble code in its Properties?

Does the USB 3.1 port on the board's IO panel work for you?

Just curious... what do you use the USB 3.1 interface for? Is there even a few true USB 3.1 flash drives available?

I have a new build Z170 Extreme7+ & I am having a similar problem. It all seems to originate from the 3.1 front panel being connected.

When the front panel is connected my boot times take much longer then without (that is when it does boot at all). The power button function dose not work correctly. When the computer goes to sleep it will freeze up as in I won't be able to resume from the sleep & Dr. Debug will show various different error codes. If  I shut down from this point using the power button the computer will try to reboot but Dr. Debug will display error code 00 & computer will not boot. At that point I turn the computer off with the power switch & usually have to complete about 2 reboots before it will boot into windows. I have also noticed that if I enter the UEFI after shutting down it seems to lag & be unresponsive.

Another problem I have when the front panel 3.1 is connected is that my USB 3.0 front header will stop working & I get a error in device manager indicating a USB code 43 error (Device failed to reset) This pops up under the Generic USB Superspeed Hub. But I can't access thumb drives or anything else through my USB 3.0 when this is happening.

I returned one motherboard already because I thought the mother board was the culprit for the problems. However I am having similar issues with the new board as well.

It seems like 90% of these problems go away just by disconnect the 3.1 front panel. I would like to keep the 3.1 front panel installed but it is causing so many problems. Is anyone else having similar issues? If any one has ran into this & has a possible solution I'm open to suggestions.

My setup is:

Windows 10 Pro 64
Asrock Z170 extreme7+
I6700K
Corsair CX750M PSU
Crucial Ballistix DDR4  2 x 8GB RAM in slot A2 & B2  (BLS2C8G4D240FSB)
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB boot drive on Sata3_0
WD 3TB drive on Sata3_2
LG Blu Ray on Sata3_3
Front Panel on Sata3_4 / Sata3_5 / SataEXP2

Thank you.

Oh shoot. Ya know what hasn't been asked/told/determined here yet?

Just what USB device ARE you plugging in and is it maybe trying to draw too much power from the ports?

I use a Z170 Extreme7+ board with Windows 10.

Windows 10 includes the change of no USB 3.0 drivers needed or supplied by Intel for the USB 3.0 ports. That is generally identical to not having USB 2.0 drivers supplied for installation with Windows since... before Windows XP.

Windows 10 uses its native USB 3.0 drivers for all USB 3.0 support or separate USB 3.0 chips found on mother boards. The Windows 8.1 download section for our board has an Intel USB 3.0 driver available, the Intel USB3.0 Adaptation Driver ver:1.0.1.45. You could try installing it with Windows 10, but I don't know if it will install or not.

My PC case has two USB 3.0 ports, connected to the mother board's USB 3.0 5 and 6 header, which is the header closest to the right edge of the board. I have two USB 3.0 flash drives connected to the ports on my PC case currently, and have left them in place for at least 1/2 an hour.

The ASRock A-Tuning System Browser tool shows both ports occupied with the USB 3.0 flash drives. Windows Explorer lists both flash drives on its main screen. I can view and access all the files on those flash drives fine. A copy of our board's manual on one flash drive came right up when I clicked on it. The same is true of my Z97 board's manual on the other flash drive. I've got over 20GB of music and movies on that flash drive, which are all accessed fine.

My point is the USB 3.0 mother board headers should be completely functional on your board without any manual driver intervention.

I'm not using the USB 3.1 front panel supplied with our board, as I'm using the resources it requires for other things.

The only time in the past where I had problems with the USB 3.0 ports on a PC case turned out to be a problem with the circuit board used for those headers in the PC case itself. It might have been a cable or cable connection problem to that circuit board for all I know. I do know that others had issues with those USB 3.0 ports on their examples of the same case, and replacing that circuit board and cable assembly fixed the problem with the front panel USB 3.0 ports.

I suggest checking that board in your PC case, and the cable as well. You may be unable to see anything wrong with it, but who knows? The manufacture of my PC case sent me a replacement part free of charge for my case, hopefully yours will too. Since using two boards has not changed your issue, it's time to check into other potential problems, such as the PC case itself.

That is the first thing I installed.... as usual after an install you have devices not recognized until you load the MB drivers then after each driver some of them go away.  There were no errors until I plugged in the 3.0 header for the front panel.  Again the rear MB USB 3.0 connectors work.
