Thanks for the thoughts. To add: I have a Samsung 950 Pro in the M.2 slot and also a Samsung 850 EVO on Sata 1. No issues with those. Also have a BluRay player burner on Sata 2. Other than that, I have an Nvidia 1080 in the 1st PCIE slot. That's pretty much it. I will try moving (maybe even temp disconnecting) the EVO and BluRay Sata cables to other of the many Sata MB ports.
I read somewhere today that another person had the same problem and found poor ("flimsy") cable connections up on the Asrock 3.1 board so I'll check those out too. As suggested, I just disconnected all Sata connectors/drives except the Sata Express from the Asrock drive but still no joy so no conflicts with other SATA devices. The M.2 is my boot drive so can't pull that and try. Tomorrow, I might pull the drive and chek the board connections and cable ends. Edited by BVH - 12 Dec 2016 at 12:27pm |

BVH has an Asus X99 Deluxe II board: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/X99-DELUXE-II/overview/ That is true in many cases, on ASRock Z170 boards, some which this USB 3.1 front panel device is supplied with, each of the SATA Express connectors, which uses two SATA ports each, is shared with specific M.2 ports. X99 chipset boards, like the one DVH has, does not do this according to the Specifications page. Plus the Z170 chipset is very different than the X99. ASRock supplies a small board that connects only to a PCIe slot for additional USB 3.1 ports on the back of the PC case. I'm beginning to think this might be a problem with the power connections to this front panel device. The four wire power connector from it to the mother board's USB 2.0 header does not seem very solid. It also seems to be a one of a kind cable and connector part. My front panel 3.1 device was working, and after I did some cable management with both of the power connections, the USB and SATA power connector, it stopped working. I put it aside since I don't use front panel connections for USB very often, and I have USB 3.1 ports on the rear panel. Seriously, try moving the two power cables connected to this device around a bit to see if you have a bad connection. If you are good with a volt meter, you can check continuity of these connections. Just thought of that, I'll try it... |

I'm assuming the SATAExpress ports are a shared resource with either and or available PCIe lanes remaining, or the SE ports shared resource(s), likely SATA ports, are occupied with HDDs/SSDs. It only takes one SATA drive connected to a shared resource to disable SE. List what your computer is comprised of hardware wise. |

That cabinet file of files from MSoft seems to be the separate driver (sys) for various platforms. I see the same files in the ASRock ASMedia 3.1 driver file that I finally found on my X99 board's download page. It is only included in the Windows 7 download section. The three platforms are amd64, i386, and ia64. The MSoft cabinet download does not have a generic installation program that I can see. Guess what, my 3.1 bay seems to have disappeared, after I moved it around a bit, and changed the cables. I'll check if I made a mistake installing the cables again. I personally do not see this as a driver issue. Edited by parsec - 10 Nov 2016 at 11:58am |

parsec, does going to sleep and waking up affect drive detection at all for you? If I go to sleep, and wake up, no drive shows up in windows explorer, but it lights up when connected to the USB3.1 A port. I need to reboot so the drive shows up.
I have no issues at all with the built in 3.1 ports in the back IO panel (extreme 7+) Also, whats your driver version for the Asmedia 3.1 controller? Thanks a lot

Have sis and bro in law over for two days so will check out your latest post suggestions on Friday. Thanks again! Rear panel on-board 3.1 USB ports, both Type A and C all work completely normal. I downloaded the latest 3.1 Asmedia file from the microsoft site linked above and used the update driver from within Device Manager for the Asmedia 3.1 Host Controller but when extracted and launched, it begins normally with a green progress bar but almost immediately says it can't find the specified file in the package. There are no files larger than 1.1 mb in the cab. Somethings missing? By comparison, I went to the Asus X99 Deluxe II download site and re-downloaded the Asmedia 3.1 driver again. It is the same version that was already installed and it has a 7mb file in the zip file. The generic one I mention about that is missing a file on Microsofts site is a newer version. I searched Google for another possible site but it just returns those sucker "drivers" sites that load you up with krap.

Well guys, don't know what to tell you, but mine works:
That's a USB 3.1 Flash drive, but it does not have the small USB C connector, just the standard USB A connector. I have the same driver installed that is on the ASRock Fatal1ty X99 Professional Gaming i7 page I linked to above. I've used the MSoft driver in the past, which worked fine. This USB flash drive was not hot when I removed it after leaving it in the PC for about an hour. In my experience, how hot a flash drive is varies with the model, some get surprisingly hot, others don't. This flash drive "flashed" like crazy when I connected it, since I had several GB of files on it. My ASRock board has no option for enabling SATA Express. I have it plugged into the SATA Express connector shared with the SATA3_0 and SATA3_1 ports. But that is a Z170 system. My SATA mode is set to RAID, and the SATA ports being used are those that support RAID. NOT that I'm saying this is needed, it is not. If anything I would think it might screw it up, but it has no affect. BVH,I see that your board has an option to Enable/Disable an ASMedia USB 3.1 Controller in the Onboard Devices Configuration screen, that must exist in your board. I assume that is for ports on the IO panel. I wonder if this is affecting anything for the ASRock bay? My board Z170 board has three SATA Express ports I must say that Asus boards have UEFI/BIOS options that I wonder about sometimes. It's almost as if it has an option to enable options that you can finally use to do something. I'm trying to say I wonder if there is an option somewhere in your UEFI that is preventing the 3.1 bay from working. I also have USB 3.1 ports on my board's IO panel, so I have two entries in Device Manager as you can see. I forgot to ask about your Device Manager entries for the USB 3.1 bay, and your other ASMedia 3.1 ports. Don't feel bad about not finding the ASMedia 3.1 USB driver. The driver is not on the USB 3.1 Bay information page (seriously ASRock?), and is not on my Z170 Extreme7+ board's page, which includes the bay with the board. I don't remember where I got it from previously, and just found it on that X99 board's page. But now I might make you feel bad again. Check the USB driver downloads on your board's Win 10 download page: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/X99-DELUXE-II/HelpDesk_Download/ Shh, I won't mention there are three versions of this driver on that page... So who knew it would be the same version, right? Sorry, I don't know what is wrong with your ASMedia 3.1 bay. Do your ASMedia 3.1 ports work on the IO panel? |

Thank you Parsec for your help. I actually have an Asus X99 Deluxe II MB. Thanks for the link to the Asmedia drivers. I launched the install but my only options were to Repair or Remove my existing version which was the same as the one I just downloaded. I chose repair and the fix was successful. But no joy. The drive still does not function. I tried a complete shut down and restart (power off) but the result was the same. I get an initial flash of the drive LED when inserted but nothing beyond that. I have the included sata express cable plugged into the back of the drive - the other end in the MB Sata Express port. I have a dedicated Sata power cable connected to the branch power connector off the Sata Express plug at the drive and finally, the USB 2.0 type power plug plugged into the drive and a USB 2.0 header.
Oh and I use Windows 10 with all the latest updates. A USB 3.0 drive inserted into the Type A slot of the drive has the same results. I'm embarrassed for not finding the drive and drivers on the ASRock site. ADDED: I just tried downloading and installing the Windows Anniversary driver from withing Device Manager, Driver Update, but system indicates theres no driver in the CAB file nor does it see any once I have extracted all files from the CAB. I have a 128 mb Sandisk 3.1 Type C flash drive and I just noticed that it is almost hot to the touch when left in the drive. Doesn't burn the fingers but man is it very very warm. I saw that driver, and will try installing it and see what happens. I also see a more recent driver (1.16.41.3) here: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=asmedia Notice how it specifies Win10 anniversary (which is what I'm running). I'll see what I can figure out. |
