win 10 is an easy system to migrate to

(and trust me i hate change ! )
also to note the win7 coa will work for win 10 as long as its the same version eg 32/64 bit
and the same level eg win7 pro allows win 10 pro

then use the create media website from windows to make the bootable usb stick for installation

You may be right about installing it in the beginning but, it was already installed on my drive.  I AM going to look into Win 10 though to see if it can be set up to look and work like I'm used to.

Actually, Windows 7 works fine with both usb2 and usb3.  I'm using it now.  It's just on boot-up withe the new Mother board that I'm having any issues.  I had all the same devices on my old motherboard and it worked just fine.

So, GForsman, you are currently trying to install W7 and have the USB mouse/KB problems?  W7 does not have USB drivers for your mouse/KB.  You can try the W7 patcher for your board, get a PS-2 mouse/KB or install W10.  What do you want to do?  Enjoy, John.

I believe this was 2 different problems.  I already had windows installed on an ssd and as soon as I made sure with minimal connections that the system booted, I connected everything else.  The first time, I had the monitor only connected and it seemed to boot to windows.  Things weren't right, the display settings were screwed up.  I also had to close the case.  I put things back together and connected all the cables, usb, network, etc.  When I turned it on again, I got Window's changed hardware and missing thing needed error.  When I tried to do as it said ( run start up repair), I ran into the second problem ( no keyboard or Mouse).  With the screwed up display and the error message, I thought I should install Windows fresh, leading to the forum post.
The only NEW hardware is the CPU, Motherboard, Power Supply, and Memory.  Everything else has worked with Windows 7 for years.  Before the upgrade, the system booted with everything connected as I tried when I booted up the first time.  That's why I'm confused by the current problem.

GForsman, now I am completely lost.  Please post all your specifications in your signature as I have.  Include BIOS/UEFI and OS.  Is this a new problem or what was going on all the time?  This is why we need to see everything that is part of your system.  Enjoy, John.

After all these problems, the problem seems to be : windows doesn't want to load with my external drives connected.  They are connected to a usb3 hub.  I haven't tried just plugging one into a port, to see if it is the drives or the hub, yet.  I did try the front usb2 and usb3 ports.  I can boot with them disconnected and then plug them in with no problems and they work.  That is a pain and takes several minutes while windows is trying to update the drivers.  If anyone knows any solution to this, I would appreciate it.
                Thanks

I have been running Windows 7 on an X370 Killer SLI board since last May.  However, I prefer a PS/2 keyboard and trackball.  I installed from my install DVD, and had just about no problem.  It did take quite a few hours to get all of the updates to Windows 7 installed.

I believe Windows 7 with SP1 has USB 2 drivers, but definitely not USB 3.
