Interesting but good news.

So i tried a test with the 10TB hard drive with another computer.  For whatever reason, it fired right up without a hitch.

BUT, given the information here about the orange wire and the PSU, my PSU is a legacy PSU. Once I disconnected (a pair of plyers and it all but jumped out), the machine started up without a hitch.

I then tested it in the WIP system with the Corsair; same deal. worked flawlessly.

Thank you to all who contributed!

feel free to cut orange 3.3v, its not used by any device and isolate it
or get molex to sata adapter, which is almost free + shipping :P

as for that feature...hmm its handy if harddrive freezes for some reason, so u just reset that drive through software (even from phone), instead of teh need to open your nas drive rack (which can be hassle if its server rack)
but without supported rack/case its useless anyway

In efforts to keep the thread from being polluted by that image, i removed it from the quote.  Yes, i read about that in my quick research.  Instead of cutting it, i'd try to remove the cable plug entirely from the sata cable connection bracket there. I also have a molex to sata adaptor somewhere, it just depends on which i'd rather do.

Once home and i have a few minutes, I'll get on this to see how everything plays out.  Thumbs Up

So idealy, I should try to find another 10 TB hard drive that doesn't specify NAS specifications, to avoid this power disable feature?  Is that what you're getting at / my understanding?

I ask because I'm honestly trying to figure this out and reduce headaches for myself in the future (this entire thing has been a wicked curve ball).  So any help / tid bit of information is greatly appreciated.

The SB950 southbridge should support 10TB drives, you should set the SATA controller to RAID mode and check again.

lol. I wasn't worried about the number per se; i plan on attaching 10 10TB hard drives in my next build and I didn't want to have to switch all my SATA connections to molex to SATAs to get around this possible issue.

I'll check more stuff tonight as I need to skedaddle for work. Thank you though!

EDIT: did some digging with this new SATA 3.3 revision and what it meant with my older PSU. sounds like this is the issue. I'm going to test the solution tonight and test the 10 TB hard drive on the newer system thats a WIP.   If everything goes smoothly and things are solved, I'll mark it as such.

Was there any announcement with this newer revision of SATA power cable?

Is there any way to tell if my PSU is a legacy Power Supply?

RAIDMAX Technology Inc.
Switching Power Supply
RX-850AE 80 Plus Gold

Bought it on 4/3/2012
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx%3FItem=N82E16817152043

I would prefer not to dig around and try and find the appropriate cables to make this work, but if i have to, I will.  it begs another question though...

Will I have the same issue with my recertified Corsair AX1500i power supply with the sheer number of 10TB drives I plan on hooking up?

I'm not one to worry about the electric bill... TIA.

Your PSU may be at fault.
This drive should be at SATA 3.3 revision, which means on Pin 3 there is power disable feature.
Some legacy power supplies that provide 3.3V power on Pin 3 would force drives with Power Disable feature to get stuck in a hard reset condition preventing them from spinning up. The problem can usually be eliminated by using a simple "Molex to SATA" power adaptor to supply power to these drives.
