Hi. wanted to get a E3V5-WS motherboard to run a freenas server.
So i can save the pcie x16 slots for hba cards for extra sata ports. can i use a pcie x1 video card in 1 of the pcie x1 slots on this motherboard? as in will it boot up as normal?

i am fully aware of the reduced bandwidth to the video card but this is a non issue for me..

or do you have no choice but to use 1 of the pcie x16 slots for a video card?

The PCIe 3.0 x1 slots on this board use PCIe 3.0 lanes provided by the C232 chipset.

The PCIe 3.0 x16 slots use the PCIe 3.0 lanes provided by the CPU.

So cards in the PCIe x1 slots will not use any of the 16 PCIe lanes from the CPU.

If you have a video card that will run using one PCIe 3.0 lane, it should work. I have never done that myself.
