Z170 Extreme 4 NVMe disappearance

Been using the system several months, one morning - "no boot device". I have gotten it to boot to the NVMe one time since, but it doesn't show in the BIOS (either place). I removed it and started an RMA with Samsung. Put in a fresh SSD (through SATA) and loaded a fresh Windows 10 install. Now the power on is flakey, it will not power on, or will spin up fans from a sleep state but not power up the display or USB devices. I tried a spare PSU but it is the same behaviour. It seems like I must turn off power at the PSU switch and let the system discharge, then it seems to power up, but with how flakey this is acting I wonder for how long?

So your NVMe SSD was not shown in System Browser and the NMVe Configuration screen? Or does your board now show M.2 NVMe SSDs in the Storage Configuration screen? New UEFI versions for some ASRock 100 series chipset boards now include NMVe SSDs there.

If you tried a new PSU (with its own cables I hope...) and the behavior is the same, then it seems like the board has a problem.

Will the PC boot at all with Win 10 on the SATA SSD?

Have you tried removing all the USB devices besides mouse and keyboard, as a test? Also change to a different keyboard and mouse, and try using different USB ports.

You could go as far as removing everything besides the memory and CPU, to test if that behavior will stop.

No idea if you use a video card or integrated graphics, but remove the video card if you have one.

If the board is failing for some reason, your NVMe SSD may be Ok after all.

Correct, it showed in neither the system browser or under the advanced settings. Since it did boot to it again the one time after being "absent" I suspect as you said that the SSD is not faulty. I have a card on order to allow me to mount it in a regular PCI slot on another machine to verify this. I did try a second, known-good PSU when the unit was failing to power-up. It also did not power the system.

Once I figured out the trick of turning off the original PSU and waiting for discharge, then powering it on that seems to work consistently thus far. I was able to add the blank SSD via a SATA cable, install Win10 and it boots and runs fine from that drive.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions, once I can verify the 950PRO state so I know whether or not to proceed with an RMA, I will strip the board of anything not needed and even try another known-good power button to further isolate the issue. I am and have been using a video card.

Ok, got the PCI card in, Samsung 950PRO booted straight away on another system. Started the RMA process with ASRock, thanks again.
