my cyberpower computer has a fatal1ty 970 performance mobo that has died. is there a direct upgrade I can buy to use without buying anything else or do I need to find another 970 performance? I can only find one online. it seems kind of stooopid to put an old model mobo back in.

Any 900 series AM3+ board will do the job. Bare in mind that there are no really "new" AM3+ boards. I believe ASRock released a "new" model AM3+ board in the form of the ASRock 970A-G3.1 which has an M.2 slot and USB 3.1. This is about as new as it gets for AM3+.
