So I have a Asrock b460m steel vengeance motherboard with an I5 10400f cpu. I built the PC which I've done many times but some of this is new to me. Everything powers on, but no monitor and the top red light on the board is on. Asrock support is telling me that's cpu, even though the board clearly indicates it's dram. So I'm assuming it's memory. I'm running CORSAIR - Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB (2PK 8GB) 3ghz and I'm wondering if the 3ghz is causing an issue. I assumed it would downgrade to the speed of the board. Are they maybe not compatible?

Dear Dneon95,

Thanks for posting.

First, since the F series CPU does not have integrated graphics, kindly check if a graphics card is installed.

Once confirmed that clear the CMOS first then install only one RAM to different slots and try to see if it will work.

Last, please remove the CPU, and check the pins of the CPU socket pins first, try reinstall the CPU and the power to see if it will work.

If possible, please try with different memory modules.

With thanks,
ASRock TSD

Yes the graphics card is definitely installed. I've cleared the Cmos and tried one module at a time won't the same result. Those modules have to be installed in pairs, so I don't see how that would work anyway. As for the cpu, I have removed it and checked the pins a couple of times and they look fine. Am I wrong in assuming that top red light on the board points directly to memory, and not cpu or graphics? I will have to by new modules to try. I guess I was curious of there were incompatible.

Hi Dneon95.

Let me try and clarify a few things for you. The CPU contains the memory controller,
the IMC as it's called (integrated memory controller) and very often, when a board
presents a code or LED indicating a RAM issue the problem stems from the CPU IMC
or the pathway from the CPU to the board (the pins in the socket and CPU contacts).

The system does not require 2 sticks of RAM to function, it only requires 2 sticks
to operate in dual channel mode, this is why testing with a single stick when
troubleshooting is recommended, it alleviates dual channel issues as a cause and
allows you to try each stick in turn to rule out a potential bad module.

When testing the system with minimal components installed for troubleshooting
the single stick of RAM should be placed in the A2 slot, often a system will not
post if the RAM is only installed in A1, B2 or B3. A2 is the favored slot.

When checking the pins in the socket it is also always a good idea to examine the
CPU itself for any dirt, grime or damage on or around the contact pads. Also check
to make sure the CPU substrate (the green PCB) is not warped or bent. Any of these
issues can potentially cause the system not to post.

Please list your full system specs, including PSU model so we know everything
you are working with. Make sure your CPU 12v power is connected to the board
and that you have the right connector attached (CPU Power 4+4 not PCIe Power 6+2).
The 2 different 8pin power connectors are keyed differently but often can
be inserted into the wrong header with a little force.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thbak you for the explination. I had thought it might be something with the Cpu all along, but was thrown off by the memory light. The pins on the board look good as far as I can tell. The connections on the cpu itself seem clean as well. Cpu doesn't often go bad so I hate to try and return it. I tried a single stick, but I will try again and make sure it's in A2. I do have the connectors right, but I know originally it was wrong. The cpu 12v has a since 8pin connection, while the other connector has 2 8 pin connections that can be split. That one goes to the graphics card. Ive been fighting this for a while now. I can try and go back to the vendor I got the cpu from, but like I saidx it's not very often those go bad.

CPUs are actually one of the most common components to be bad these days. It never
used to be the case but as they have shrunk the process node the failure rates have
gone way up, especially with intel who are trying to squeeze every last bit of
performance out of their dies to compete with AMD now. How the tables have turned.
