Topic: Z170 Extreme7+ USB3.0 Header ProblemPosted: 01 Feb 2016 at 12:07am |

I have extreme7+ running windows 10. When I plug in the USB3.0 header for the front panel USB plugs... the MB boot sequence stops at X99 for thirty seconds then loads windows. Windows also shuts down the Generic Superspeed USB Hub device. I am using a Phantech case with front board that has (2) USB3.0, audio and reset. The front USB3.o port does not work, but the same device plugged into the rear connector works fine. I did not see any USB3.0 drivers for windows 10 for the MB. Am I missing a driver or is it something else.

That is a link on my personal Google Drive to the latest that I know of ASM1142 USB 3.1 controller Drivers. Read the below FIRST before proceeding. IMPORTANT : Uninstall the currently shown installed ASMedia/Microsoft drivers FIRST! I can not stress that enough. Uninstall, reboot, then install the driver I linked above. DO NOT perform an over the top driver install here. Post back your results |

Since my computer was locking up randomly I decided to exchange the MB. So I got it in and swapped everything out. Brought it up and everything looked good. So I plugged in the front USB cable... still everything looked good. Before just plugging in the cable would give the fault in the first screen shot. So now I plugged in a USB drive. It acted like it was reading the drive then locked the whole system. After I rebooted I got the error listed in the following screen shot. Even with the cable unplugged I get this error. Before if I unplugged the cable the error went away. I also get random lock ups. So different symptoms but the same result.
http://i.imgsafe.org/18ab001.jpg Not sure where to go from here.... I saw the post about the driver... it is a 3.1 driver, would that have an affect on the 3.0 MB header. If I load it do I remove just the AS Media Controller or others too. |

Yea, sorry there. Me bad. Don't know why I looked at the posted pic and that ASMedia/MS driver came starring right at me. Have you installed the required Intel INF "driver' from your motherboards download page? |

That is the first thing I installed.... as usual after an install you have devices not recognized until you load the MB drivers then after each driver some of them go away. There were no errors until I plugged in the 3.0 header for the front panel. Again the rear MB USB 3.0 connectors work.

I use a Z170 Extreme7+ board with Windows 10.
Windows 10 includes the change of no USB 3.0 drivers needed or supplied by Intel for the USB 3.0 ports. That is generally identical to not having USB 2.0 drivers supplied for installation with Windows since... before Windows XP. Windows 10 uses its native USB 3.0 drivers for all USB 3.0 support or separate USB 3.0 chips found on mother boards. The Windows 8.1 download section for our board has an Intel USB 3.0 driver available, the Intel USB3.0 Adaptation Driver ver:1.0.1.45. You could try installing it with Windows 10, but I don't know if it will install or not. My PC case has two USB 3.0 ports, connected to the mother board's USB 3.0 5 and 6 header, which is the header closest to the right edge of the board. I have two USB 3.0 flash drives connected to the ports on my PC case currently, and have left them in place for at least 1/2 an hour. The ASRock A-Tuning System Browser tool shows both ports occupied with the USB 3.0 flash drives. Windows Explorer lists both flash drives on its main screen. I can view and access all the files on those flash drives fine. A copy of our board's manual on one flash drive came right up when I clicked on it. The same is true of my Z97 board's manual on the other flash drive. I've got over 20GB of music and movies on that flash drive, which are all accessed fine. My point is the USB 3.0 mother board headers should be completely functional on your board without any manual driver intervention. I'm not using the USB 3.1 front panel supplied with our board, as I'm using the resources it requires for other things. The only time in the past where I had problems with the USB 3.0 ports on a PC case turned out to be a problem with the circuit board used for those headers in the PC case itself. It might have been a cable or cable connection problem to that circuit board for all I know. I do know that others had issues with those USB 3.0 ports on their examples of the same case, and replacing that circuit board and cable assembly fixed the problem with the front panel USB 3.0 ports. I suggest checking that board in your PC case, and the cable as well. You may be unable to see anything wrong with it, but who knows? The manufacture of my PC case sent me a replacement part free of charge for my case, hopefully yours will too. Since using two boards has not changed your issue, it's time to check into other potential problems, such as the PC case itself. |

Oh shoot. Ya know what hasn't been asked/told/determined here yet?
Just what USB device ARE you plugging in and is it maybe trying to draw too much power from the ports? |
