Looking to build a new system using:
x399 Taichi motherboard Threadripper 2950X and this memory (found on PCpartspicker.com) CMK128GX4M8X3200C16 The problem is that it is not on the QVL. I want to use this system for work with virtual machines so 128gb RAM is almost mandatory. So I'm looking over the QVL and now I'm really confused. Do I only look at memory on the QVL that supports 2/4/8 DIMM slots? What about the SS/DS column--is that important? Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. I'd like to keep the cost of the memory under $1000 if that helps. OH, I plan on using the Cooler-Master Wraith Ripper CPU cooler so the memory will need to fit with that. Bill W |

In general it's best to stick to the QVL. Best to look for 8 stick configurations there.
SS/DS denotes the so called 'ranks'. You definately want to go with SS, as it is way easier on the IMC. There are many discussions here about TR and memory. My personal favorite is the Flare X by G.Skill. It's very fast and guaranteed to work with TR/AM4 systems. Should fit your budget too, maybe? I'm now seeing some Flare X in 16GB per stick density. This is also an interesting option but you have research it additionally. If not in rush, some new A-die memoey from Samsung is on the horizon and it's expected to be very dense and very fast. |

Keep looking. Corsair says that kit you listed is compatible with Intel X299 MB's. Thats all.
https://www.corsair.com/ww/en/Categories/Products/Memory/vengeance-lpx-black/p/CMK128GX4M8X3200C16#tab-tech-specs "Compatibility - Intel X299" -------- hahaha 128GB of 3200 for under $1000 for TR? Good luck. Seriously. G.Skill Guaranteed Compatible memory for your X399 Taichi http://www.gskill.com/en/configurator?manu=52&chip=3423&model=3428 (Note: Be careful here to look under the Kits QVL that your Taichi is listed. Some of the Kits are cert'd for the 299WX only) Edited by wardog - 10 May 2019 at 11:15am |

Too, don't be concerned with 3200 mem.
The 2950X is rated for 2933. Will you hit 2933 with 128Gb will be hit and miss. Here's a page with a pic of what appears to be G.Skill Flare-X sticks fitting under that Wraith Ripper: https://www.hardocp.com/article/2018/09/28/threadripper_air_coolerssilver_arrow_tr4_vs_wraith_ripper/3 If you do so choose G.Skill and cannot find it in stock, PM me ![]() |

I've had issues finding compatible memory that would support all 8 slots being populated. In the end the only thing that worked for me and didn't cost $2k+ were four sets of 2x16GB bought in two batches, 2x G.Skill F4-2400C16D-32GFXR then 2x F4-2400C16D-32GFX. All are the same memory with the same timings, just two sets with black heatsinks and two with red heatsinks.
That's been working flawlessly for me for over six months and didn't cost a lot (each kit was about $250CAD at the time, they're down to about $200CAD now). I don't think you'll find faster memory that'll work while all the slots are occupied. |

I forgot, I would also strongly recommend a closed loop water cooler for your 2950X. It'll run cooler and quieter than your air cooler as long as your case has top vents. No clearance issues with that either.

You will have difficulty getting RAM to run at higher frequencies with 8 modules. That said, quad channel 2400 with tight timings still beats even 3600 in dual channel for raw throughput. Make sure whatever you end up going with is single rank (RAM chips on only one side), that will increase your chances of getting higher clocks stable on the RAM as Xhue noted. Wardog's suggestion of G.Skill is a good one too, they have tailor built kits for Ryzen and Threadripper, even on the more budget end. If cost is a factor you may want to look at getting something like G.Skill Fortis RAM in 32gb kits.
Some suggestions for you: https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2933c16q2-128gfx - 2933 128gb kit (8x16gb) or on the cheaper end: https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2400c15q-64gft - You will need 2 kits of these for a total of 8 modules. The frequency is lower but it shouldn't be too much of a performance hit in quad channel. Gimli's suggestion of getting a decent AIO water cooler is also a good one. I am running a Corsair H105 on mine and it gets pretty toasty even with a 240mm rad. I should also mention that ASRock's monitoring and tweak app displays t-Die temps so subtract 27c from that figure for actual core temps. I generally install Ryzen master and get my temp readouts from there. It was pretty scary loading up windows to be greeted with 97c in ASRock's "Phantom Gaming Tuning" app. Ryzen Master then showed a much more reasonable 70c that quickly dropped into the high 30s once windows was done loading. After rearranging my case fans and moving my rad to a more efficient location I now top out at about 65c when rendering 3d (the most intensive task I do on the system). |
