3800X CPU Temps High? |

I thought I had waited long enough for the obvious bugs to get resolved with the Ryzen 3000 cpu's. However, I just fired up my new Taichi X470 MB with a 3800X processor, 16 GB 3200-14 G.Skill Memory, an EVGA 1660 Ti SC video card and an EVGA CLC 280 Cooler. The system is running W10 1903 with all the latest updates. The OS was last used on an old faithful Z97 Extreme6/4790K system. Much to my surprise Windows 10 finally came up running on the new MB and CPU! That's were the happiness ended!
After updating the BIOS on the Taichi X470 to 3.60 and applying all the appropriated drivers the system runs "okay". Except...it idles @ 32 to 45C depending on what is going on in the background. Is this normal for the 3800X? Also, when running the AID64 stress test the CPU reaches 85C! Is this normal for the 3800X? I'm afraid to run IBT for fear the desk will catch on fire! Before I start removing the AOI and applying different thermal pastes and application patterns am I chasing smoke, so to speak, and the 3800X just runs hot? |

Forgot to mention all the BIOS settings except the Memory are at the system defaults. The Memory is set to Profile 1 3200-14.

yeah, its weird that noone talks about this. considered 7nm and real bad stock cooler, these temps may be normal or not:

I apologize ASRock/AMD, I now love my Taichi X470/3800X system. The idle temps that had me questioning why I bought the 3800X were not as bad as I first thought. When I setup the C7H/2700X system to use system defaults the difference between the 2700X and 3800X was minimal. The increased idle temps when the systems are set to the defaults is caused by the BIOS jumping the Vcore every time a background task appears! I ran IBT on both systems with the default setting and the results were 147 seconds for the 2700X and 134.75 seconds for the 3800X. Unfortunately, the max temperatures were 67C and 76C respectively. Looks like the default BIOS wants to throw a lot more voltage at the 3800X! I'm sure somebody out there has a way to override the Vcore without turning off all the other stuff AMD has done with the 3000 series. My other "benchmark" is running Handbrake to convert a Blu-ray disk to an MP4 file. The 2700X took 52:29 and the 3800X took 42:40 to complete the same task. That's why I bought the 3800X hoping the Handbrake performance would be better than the 2700X. I got lucky! I'm not sure there is much to be gained OC'ing the 3800X but...If there is a good thread on the 3800X I'd appreciate a link. |

Still looking for some input on the Ryzen 3800X on the Taichi X470 MB! Seems like MY 3800X runs hot compared to the results shown on one site. It shows the 3800X reaching 69C when running AIDA64 at the BIOS defaults. Mine runs at ~76C with an EVGA CLC 280 AIO cooler! Handbrake runs at about the same temperature ~76C. I'm real happy with the Handbrake performance (time to convert a BluRay disk to MP4) but the 3800X is running considerably hotter than my 2700X. Seems to be a common problem. I've seen one thread where there is a BIOS PBO option on the ASUS MB's to limit the max temperature but I cannot find a similar option in the Taichi BIOS. Any other 3800X users out there?

I would assume you have already checked your thermal paste application? Better
a little too much than too little with these things, just be careful not to use so much that is spews out over your board components. I generally find with AIOs the best method is to spread the paste evenly across the die about the thickness of a sheet of standard printing paper. You will have a little squeeze out but you will have the certainty that you are getting proper thermal transfer between the IHS and the block. Doing this on my 2950x dropped my temps by almost 10c vs the "X" method most people recommend for Threadripper. Making sure you have good airflow over the CPU and VRM area also helps more than you would guess. |

Thanks for the thermal past comments.
The system is using a Corsair 750D case with the covers off and the front and rear case fans blowing along with the AIO fans. I have built (currently have) four 4790K systems, one 1700X system, one 2700X system and now one 3800X system. So I've played with all sorts of AIO coolers and have boxes of parts for custom loop systems. I am currently using MX-4 (2019) thermal paste and an EVGA CLC 280 cooler on this system. I'm tempted to dig out the custom loop stuff and see if that makes any difference, I seriously doubt I would see more that a couple of degrees C reduction based on past experiences with the 4790K systems. Looks like others out there are having all sorts of heat issues with the 3800X. You could try under volting and see how low you can get the CPU voltage while
still stable at stock settings. There was a BIOS update (and likely every update since) that addressed heat issues caused by idle tasks triggering higher CPU voltage than they should have (1.0.0.3AB I think it was). That shouldn't have much effect on load temps though. I suspect it may need fine tuning on AMD's end to get voltages more efficient. IMO, it's probably a direct result of AMD chasing MHZ with ryzen 3000 in order to put the screws to intel. I feel like they are pushing the 3000 series to it's limits to achieve this and that is resulting in higher than typical voltage compared to previous gen parts. Just a personal observation mind you but it does make sense. Still 76c under full load isn't terrible. I believe 95c is the max temp for the 3000 series so under 80 is fine. It seems the X parts run hot. |

Yeah, I'm getting a little smarter. I've gone in and changed the AMD Ryzen Balanced Power Plan Maximum Processor State from 100% to 95% to 90% to 80%. Does strange things to the AIDA64 Stability Test. Temps went from ~75C to ~40's. Cinebench scores went down also and tended to follow the % in the Power Plan. But...it looks like the CPU was getting almost minimal Vcore on any setting except 100%! That is the reason for the drastic maximum temperature reduction under load and the lower Cinebench scores.
I guess I'm going to have to be happy with the 100% setting and ~76c temps until AMD/ASRock/American Megatrends fine tunes what is going on with all the 3000 magic. |

I've got a similar issue and no matter what I do the idle vcore is high and idle temps are also higher than I'd expect. I've attributed this to the BIOS 3.60 though, as previous versions the CPU would idle lower and vcore was under 1.0v when idle. Now the cores are just boosting up, I actually get lower voltage in games and applications.
I'm not going to worry about it or make anymore changes trying to force it lower, as this seems like a bad implementation of BIOS microcode by ASRock imo and hopefully gets fixed if they can be bothered to release the next BIOS. |
