Asrock 100-ht CPU Upgrade

I want to upgrade a old Asrock 100-ht. So i want four core cpu to build a home server. Asrock Core 100-ht is based on Mobile HM55 Express.

Always go with the manufacturer support list, in this case ASRock's. Just because intel lists a CPU as socket compatible does not mean that it is compatible with your system. If you look on the intel list you will note that the 35w CPUs listed are the only ones on the ASRock support list. That means that the other CPUs are very likely not compatible with the power design of the Core 100-HT. 

Also worth noting is that there are no quad core CPUs supported by that board, even the i7 parts are dual core with hyperthreading (2 cores 4 threads). In your situation I would try and go for an i7 model from the ASRock support list, the difference between the i7 and i5 is that the i7 has 4mb of cache vs the i5's 3mb. Unless the price difference is huge then the extra cache should be worth a few extra $$.

To add to what Xaltar said, which I agree with 100%, lets look at the board used in this PC, which seems to be the ASRock HM55-HT:



We can see the socket 988 processor, and above it what I wanted to see, the voltage regulator stage, or VRM used in this board. It looks like a 2 + 1 phase VRM. That is what limits this PC to certain processors. The higher TDP CPUs require more power, which this board may not be able to provide. Cooling of a higher TDP processor, and the VRM stage, which we can see does not have a heat sink, is another factor regarding why only lower TDP processors can be used with this board/PC.

We also don't know if the higher TDP processor are supported by the CPU microcode in the BIOS.

But there is another reason why the four core i7 processors won't work for you in this board. None of them have integrated graphics. For example:

Scroll down to the Integrated peripherals section. The Intel specs page for these processors also have the Processor Graphics column empty, and the detailed specs for each of them have no entry for graphics support.

Unless you somehow planned on building a "headless" server (no monitor), using one of those processors would be extra challenging.

Finally, this generation of processors is six years old, so they are no longer being made. When new, the four core i7 CPUs were priced between ~$350 to over $1000. You would need to find a used one somewhere.

Sorry to say, your initial idea is probably impossible to make happen.

As a virtual server host (without monitor) less than four cores isn't an option.
I don't need i7 processors, i need four cores (atom, i3, i5, ....) for virtualization (low frecuency cores best). Cooling is not the real problem.


I have some doubts about asrock & intel list are update.

I have an ASUS A52JK which also comes with Intel i5 430M CPU, which is shown in the link below:

The same laptop also comes with other types of processor, which are:
1) Intel i5 430M/450M/460M/520M/540M CPU
2) Intel i3 330M/350M/370M CPU
3) Intel PentiumĀ® Dual-Core P6000 CPU

I am thinking of upgrading the CPU of my laptop to Intel i7 940XM or i7 640M. I have checked the TDP and CPU ID for Intel i5 430M, 640M and Intel i7 940XM. The TDP for i7 940XM are higher, which is 55W while the TDP for Intel i5 430M and 640M is 35W. The CPU ID for Intel i5 430M is 20652, the CPU ID for Intel i7 540M is 20655 and the CPU ID for Intel i7 940XM is 106F1.

After reading the successful stories from the first link that I give above (and ignoring the unsuccessful stories :p ), I feel like I want to go for i7-940XM. If i7-940XM doesn't work, then I will try i7-640M (or lower). If the i7-940XM, works but have overheating problem, then I will try the i7-840QM (or lower).
