I have a X670E PRO RS MB that i got delivered today for an upgrade to my system. I have based this on a AMD 7800X3D, ASUS RTX 3060 video card and 64gig of dual dimms 6000. I don't overclock, so the profiles are standard. All parts are new and delivered today.

I have 7 drives, one being an old 1TB WD HDD, the rest being recent Samsung 860,870s SSDs etc. I have two 870s that i brought recently which all were working in my last system that i tried to upgrade today, so fairly confident that all these drives and cables are in good order. These i believe have the OS on as i had to move them due to Win10 size.

I have tried repeatedly to get it to read the MBR from the drives, done each one in turn and it still will not find the OS. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of advice around the settings for the BIOS which I updated before installing the processor with the flash drive, all went smoothly and when i go into BIOS it shows the latest installed and detects the processor. The rig POSTs as i would expect, no on board LED warnings. I confirm that the Sata drive shows as boot device in BIOS and restart, the program loads beyond the startup logo and i get a black screen with a single solid cursor.

I am at a loss to how to get this to work. I have trawled the internet for an answer, but sadly it still eludes me.

Welcome any advice you can give, thank you in advance.

Should be formatted to MBR as they were below the size threshold. I checked CSM and changed something, it then bricked the mobo. I re-installed the BIOS, it is back to the usual fault now.

I left one DIMM in B2 as per the book, still nothing. I have the SATAs as ACHI and they are read by the bios, unfortunately i am unable to determine which one is the OS boot drive. I was hoping for the BIOS to automatically detect it and just boot.

All the LEDs for the on board diagnostics are out, so i'm assuming there is no obvious issue with the kit connected.

This was supposed to be a quick swap, clearly the computing gods are punishing me!

Is there anyway that i can read the sata's to see which is the OS? I find it strange that this bios doesn't read more than a few lines of the drives ID. Does it matter if the drive is in port 5 or port 1?

I just cannot find any information anywhere. The only vid i found on YT is a guy installing this board, setting up for a m2.5 and new OS install.

Hi There...

You could boot a windows iso to ascertain which drive is which then cancel the install with no changes made....

I was downloading that media from MS at the time you emailed, but thanks I appreciate you taking the time.

I have managed to get it to read the data stick and it started the download for Win10Pro as selected. I had what i believed was my original OS SDD, it reads it as primary, but then an error stating;-

"Win cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Win can only be installed to GPT disks".

I didnt partition any of my smaller drives, so confused why it might detect a partition.

Ok, i'm no expert with anything BIOS related, so googled it. It states something about the BIOS firmware needing to be updated to allow this? I found listed on Asrock's website that there is a download for "Restart to UEFI ver:1.0.12" not sure if this is what i will need to install or how to do that before i add an OS?

I've ordered a SATA>USB device, so i can plug them into my laptop to check which drive is which, so should have that resolved tomorrow.

I've got more reading to do about this progress made, i'm just thank full that i dont have to return anything...

Thanks

Well i tried;-

CSM enabled
Video Legacy
Storage N/A
Locked up Mobo, POST no video out of either Mobo or GPU.

Reset CMOS.Reboot.

CSM Enabled
Video N/A
Storage Legacy
Locked up Mobo and gave me 5 beeps. Wouldnt allow access to BIOS.

Reset CMOS.Reboot.

CSM Disabled
Video/Storage NA
Goes direct into BIOS without pressing a key.

CSM disabled wont allow me to select either video/storage options IIRC.

Ok, what a fecking nightmare!

No matter what i did, it would not boot the OS drive on legacy anything. My old setup was 10 years old and the SSD's were about a year old.The only thing it would allow to boot is a fecking GPT drive.

I tried to find a MBR to GPT conversion tool and keep your files, great i thought! Found that WIN10 has GPT2MBR.exe already installed. But there is a logical partition on the same drive, tried everything then found diskpart command in Win10 to remove the partition and keep my files!

Ok, so how to use? I googled it and found an entry that included the addition of instruction "/clean" DO NOT DO THIS!!!
It wiped the boot record off the drive and i lost all my files. It also removes any partition on that target drive and then converts it to GPT in about a second.

DON'T DESPAIR! "Google;- restore partition after diskpart" There are loads of sharks on the net offering to sort it for you for $100. Turns out that instruction on how to USE 'Diskpart' to clean the drive was added by one of those B'stards. Strangely, Windows own help forum realize that this occurs and recommends the same payware aka ransomeware in thier help section!Like WTF Bill!

I found a 'Test Disk' its free to use, run from CMD it recovered my partition and my files, unfortunately the other unused space i was trying to add to it wiped some additional files, so ended up having no option to make a bootable data stick and re-install Win10Pro on another new GPT drive...Thank fully it is all working now. The data loss is a pig, lost a lot of important stuff.

Moral of the story, don't think that changing the hardware helps. My backup didn't work when i needed i most and when you change the hardware, all of these new security protocols that most sites now use, cause you to be blacklisted as a potential hacker - I'm still trying to get into Yahoo mail FFS after 2 days.

#end rant
