From my experience my Samsung 850 EVO 1TB M.2 SATA ssd wasn't recpgnized in M.2 slot @ (lower M.2) slot.
It works in M.2 slot 1 just fine.
M.2 slot 2 aoso doesn't recognize my working Samsung 850 EVO 500GB M.@ SATA ssd.
It works fine in my old ASUS Maximus VI Hero I gave my brother for his pc.
The X470 Taichi Ultimate & AMD Ryzen 2700X replaced that mobo and a Intel I5 6600K in this pc.

ok let me try to tell you again

the top slot supports nvm & sata

the bottom slot only supports nvm

so the bottom slot will never recognize your 850 EVO you need at least a 960 EVO.
all 8XX are sata interfaced m.2

I'm talking about a WD blue drive, not a samsung. In the specs and manual it says it accepts it. My older b350 Pro4 board accepted it just fine as well

Yeah. I realize that, but read up on the 2 M.2 slots.
The top was the newr speed/type when the X470/B/450 mobo's wer released last year.
The bottom is the older speed M.2 slot.
That's something I like w/ASUS ROG mobo's, they give you RAMCache & RAMDrive software.
I used the RAMCache on my old mobo. and it sped up my 2nd ssd and my h.d.d.
I used Samsung Magician's Rapid Mode on my M.2 ssd as it had Windows, programs and newer games on it.
Look for a RAMCache program and it may speedup your 2nd ssd and a h.d.d (if you have one).
You may have to pay for that RAMCache software.
I tried the ASUS ROG RAMCache on this pc and it won't install.
The software detects that I don't have anything Asis on my current pc.
I need to upgrade my 2 Samsung 850 EVO 1TB. ssd's I currently have in this pc.
They're both almost out of room due to all my games I have.
Those 2 upgrades are for 2020, though.
I hhave a video card and 4K monior upgrades for this year.
I'm getting a SVGA RTX 2080 Super next month and in Decembwe I'm gonna get a Acer Predator X27 4K monitor.

I'm a computer hardware technician. All I'm trying to ascertain is why SATA is not always working on the 2nd slot. when that is designated as a SATA III and PCIE 2nd gen x4 slot.
Thanks

while cache has its benefits it always has its risk. its better to really get a fast m.2 over obtaining the same or faster speed with a cache

I can double confirm that the physical manual is reporting the m.2 support wrongly, do check the website for information, the lower m.2 slot only supports NVME, not SATA, so your SATA drive can only run in 1st slot, and your NVME can only run in lower m.2 slot with gimped speed (provided it's at least gen3x4).

Do check my post from more than 1 year ago on Taichi Ultimate variant, but I do believe they are the same underlying board so the m.2 support is the same.

Thanks all, extremely disappointing in ASRock for providing fraudulent information both in the manual and online (though online has been updated) I think I received an old stock board as its 1.10 cant believe my cheap b350 board handles m.2 drives better than this $300+ board

i dont see a problem for a high end board not supporting a low end m.2 while the low end board supports it
