Thanks again for all your help Xaltar. No it wasn't a lightning strike a tree came down somewhere in our power grid and knocked out about 800 customers. I will check out the UPS advice.
Hopefully I will be up and running in a couple of weeks. Tom |

Protection from voltage spikes and lightning can be provided by good quality multiple outlet AC power surge protectors.
These are much cheaper than a good UPS, and a UPS may not have any better surge protection than a multiple outlet surge protector. They both will use the same technology/parts to provide surge protection, unless the UPS has special circuitry for this feature, but you'll pay much more for it. The electronic component used to prevent surges from passing on to the connected equipment (called an MOV) will be destroyed by a very large voltage surge. That's part of their design. Unless the surge protector outlet or UPS has an indicator that the surge protection no longer functions (most don't), if you experience a voltage surge like you did, you should replace the surge protectors. |
