    Posted: 07 Jan 2016 at 10:16am
I have been trying to contact support about this but I have not gotten a reply from them.

I have currently 8 x M393A2G40DB0-CPB  - 16GB RAM sticks on my motherboard with total RAM of 128GB and this is specified as MAX RAM for this motherboard on the Asrock web-page, However it seems to be for non ECC memory.

I have the Intel E5-2697 v3 and it supports 768GB RAM

However now they have listed 32GB RAM sticks as compatible with the motherboard, but it is unclear if this is only with 4 sticks installed or if one can install 8x and end up with 256GB RAM.

So I am wondering for example about the Samsung RAM M393A4K40BB0-CPB and M393A8G40D40-CRB.

This would allow total of 256GB and 512GB RAM on this motherboard, making it absolutely fantastic for computational work like I do.

P.s. Micron has as well a little faster RAM called MTA36ASF4G72PZ-2G3A1 and comes in 32GB flavor. Asrock has the Crucial 32GB chips listed as compatible CT32G4RFD4213.36FA1 but not if possible with 8 together.

The only 32GB memory listed that I can see is the Crucial 2133 CT32G4RFD4213.36FA1.

The memory support list is clear IMO about the 32GB memory modules. For Quad channel operation the list shows "4pcs", or 4 pieces total for the 32GB DIMMs.

If the memory could be used with four OR eight pieces, then a 'v' is shown in the Quad Channel column.

Since we only see 4pcs in the Quad Channel column for the Crucial 2133 32GB DIMMs, that is the limit for that memory type.

What is it that makes you think it is unclear about the number of 32GB DIMMs that can be used?

Regarding the other Samsung memory, your question to ASRock support has likely been delayed due to the New Years holiday that is celebrated for several days in Chinese culture countries.

What I think is unclear is the limitation of 128GB, as XEON processor and ECC memory should be able to have more then the specified 128GB.

The 128 GB limitation to me would be for regular RAM not ECC.

If Asrock would support 256GB and 512GB RAM on the WS motherboards they would be placing themselves in a very good place in the market.

I am still curious about this subject.

For example it does say as well 4pcs for the 16GB chips CT16G4RFD824A.18FA1, though in theory it should day V for Quad Channel as motherboard supports 128GB.

Me, in my whacko mind mind you, would imagine if it's listed compatible with 4 sticks that 8 would be no problem.

As the BIOS is clearly acceptable of that specific memory, I'd say the sky's the limit, or you run out of slots to place them.

ie: That's probably all the sticks ASRock had/has on hand to test with, 4.

But we know from our experiences that if a BIOS accepts and is compatible with a specific memory, one, two, four, eight, or even sixteen should run w/o issue.

I see no reason slot wise restricting the number of compatible sticks. What? Is ASRock there stating that although the board has eight slots, please only use four?

Well thats the thing, I am not going to buy 8x32GB or 8x64GB sticks to find out they have BIOS limit locked to 128GB, this is the reason I have been trying to contact them for few months no Reply.

I think it would be such a shame if its only BIOS limitation (software firmware) rather then hardware limitations and they do not update BIOS to support more then 128GB RAM.

Yea. I hear ya. I myself might maybe balk at doing so myself. Yet what you state BIOS wise, ie limitation, makes no sense. Why limit a known server CPU by intentionally hampering any capability related to memory. That, as I say, would mean that ASRock went out of their way to do so.

Tell ya what. It's too late here in the US, ASRock TS is closed, but tomorrow I will call them and inquire. Again, I don't for one second believe them to havve done such a thing.

I will inquire as to the specific memory on the QVL and if it is indeed a four stick limit and or a 128 or 256 limit of this specific memory listed on the QVL.

Is there anything you'd like me to ask of them in the way of specifics?

I am mostly curious about the 32GB and 64GB chips from Samsung. They are ECC.

8X32GB RAM = 256GB RAM
M393A4K40BB0-CPB

and

8x64GB RAM = 512GB RAM
M393A8G40D40-CRB

I am already using the 16GB chips from Samsung and they are listed as compatible and I currently have 128GB RAM.

Copy. I'll post back after I call them tomorrow. Or, concerning the 32 and 64 sticks, after I hear back from them if they do decide to purchase and test them.
