Hello to you all. This may be a long post so I will try and make it as short as I can. I have been given a tower PC with an AS rock pro 3 mother board. I don't know if this is a rev 1 or other. It has a AMD FX 4300 cpu, and a gigabyte GVr 7360 graphics card. The system would run but cut out after 20 mins. I suspect this was due to overheating as the main case fan does not work, the cpu fan and heat sink were full of dust as was the filter on the case. The graphics card fan has fallen off the motor and the heatsink is full of dust. I can and have remedied most of this. What I want to do is upgrade the components, at a reasonable cost. Looking at the spec the cpu is a four core is it worth while upgrading to an 8core unit? Likewise the Graphics card, what should I get, or should I get another of the same issue and enable the cross fire on the board?
The current OS is windows seven. Can I upgrade this to windows 10. I know you peeps are really enthusiastic about all this and I look forward to your expert advice.
Happy new year.
Chris.

Get all new components, less frustration. Not much of todays tech will work with what you have.

Thank you for your reply. That's great because I don't want to use any of the new 'Tech' that's why I asked how I could upgrade the motherboard. If I wanted new 'Tech' I would go out and buy new stuff. The idea is to rebuild this with some reasonably priced improvements.
Its a project with my seven year old grandson who got a BBC micto bit computer for Christmas, he has really taken to coding with Python and I though it would be interesting for him to see how we can upgrade this unit.
So anyone any advice?
Cheers.

you can upgrade
it still 'can' be a decent enough unit

but its all down to cost vs reward of course

the 4 core(2 core) 4xxx series is wasted in that board (or the board is wasted with 4 core more like)
an 8 core fx8000 would be better suited BUT ! the price of them second hand this year is insanely stupid i mean really never worth it at all
circa 80-100 quid for a used one
so a plan for you ?
take a chance on a 'bent pins' 8 core (which i do from time to time on ebay, but i pay circa 10 quid for them)
or hopefully grab a 6 core the 6300 is usually more sensibly priced (look for new listings and hopefully grab one buyitnow underpriced)
just make sure the cpu has a code with a '3' as the second digit 83xx/63xx etc as this is vastly better then the first release of the fx cpus
dont get me wrong a new ryzen amd cpu will still run rings round it but hey at the price they hold up well

graphics card
well once again second hand is only real option
top end ? gtx970 a bit under utilised but does actually work well with a 8xxx cpu (e.g. 100 FPS at 1080p in world of tanks etc )
other options would be a gtx960 or maybe a gtx750/gtx950 for cheaper and less demanding free to play games

as for system ram
at least 8gb 1600mhz (preferably 1866mhz)
comfy 16gb
to buy ram take my advice buy it from CEX much cheaper than ebay and if you order online 2x4gb or 2x8gb 1866mhz its about 90% certain to get a decent matched pair sent out to you for £21 posted for 2x4gb

ask me how i know ?
i spent a long long time buying up all the ddr3 from cex
testing it in my am3 test system
and reselling it on ebay

couple of bits imissed

DONT try to crossfire/sli the board (it will perform WORSE in games)

and win10 , well i use w10 on all my builds including the am3 test rig
this is a asus board though so i cant confirm you can find all drivers for your asrock one (but to be fair win10 seems pretty good at using older 64 bit drivers)
