Hi

Just finished building a HTPC using an FM2A88M Extreme4+ mobo. However, with the ram fitted (2 x 8gb Kingston Fury HyperX Blue 1866) the fans spin but it won't start up or post (blank screen and no post beep from system speaker).

However, with the ram removed I get the no memory warning beeps.

I have tried the RAM in different slots but it makes no difference.

According to Partpicker this ram should be compatible.  Any ideas?

Thanks..

First. As it's a common oversight, have you connected the 8-pin power leading from the PSU to the 8-pin CPU Power socket in the upper left corner of the motherboard?

Secondly, don't rely on PartPicker for compatibility concerns. Most times they're good yet not perfect. Spend time on each manufacturers site to determine compatibility.

W/o knowing the P/N for your memory, below is the 16GB(2x8GB) Kits Kingston certifies for your board.
http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/Default.aspx?DeviceType=7&Mfr=ASR&Line=Motherboard&Model=85467&Description=Kingston_ValueRam_Memory_HyperX_Memory_for_ASRock_Motherboard_FM2A88M_Extreme4+

Third. On your motherboard in the lower right corner directly below the sink is your BIOS chip. It has a white sticker on it that when first shipped is printed the BIOS revision. So long as the board is new, not second hand, open boxed etc.... , this is the BIOS it is running.

What does it say on the sticker?

Hi Wardog, thanks for your reply.

The Ram p/n is HX318C10FK2/16 and is certified by Kingston as being compatible with my mobo.

The bios version is P2.40 - the mobo is new.

My PSU (model AvF Micro-ATX EZ450) has a 4 pin connector and it is plugged into the 8 pin socket, connecting pins 1-5 as shown in the instruction manual (it is the only way the plug will fit)

The CPU currently installed is an AMD X2 340X.  I  first tried with a X4 860K but then realised I need to flash the bios before I can use it.

hehehe, the X2 340X doesn't have an iGPU so you'd better have a graphics card in there if you expect to see ANYTHING Wink

Another common issue.

No, it doesn't. The specs say:

"Integrated AMD Radeon R7/R5 Series Graphics in A-series APU"

In A-series APU, not on the motherboard. Also, the CPU support list states the following:

"Some of AMD CPU (i.e AMD Athlon/Sempron family CPU) does not have integrated graphics processor. When this kind of CPU is installed, a discrete VGA card is required."

It "Supports" the graphics of CPU's that have an iGPU.

But "onboard graphics" , um... No.

A dedicated graphics card will be needed to allow you to get video out when using that X2 340.

Once you get that card in and video out, you'll be able to flash the BIOS

By what you initially posted a graphics card is the only thing in your way.

No beeps with the memory in, beeps with the memory out? Yea, put any ol' graphics card in her and I'm betting you'll be off to the races.

Post back the results.

Meh, no friend to borrow one from.? I mean, you'll only need in your HTPC till you flash the BIOS and place that other CPU in.

EDITED. My BAD. You'll need one regardless. The X4 860K doesn't have an iGPU either
