My current PC:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K ++ ARCTIC Freezer 13 CO MBO: ASROCK Z170 Pro4S RAM: 2x8GB Crucial DDR4 2133MHz HDD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB ++ Samsung SSD PM981 512GB M.2 ++ Seagate 2TB Barracuda 7200 VGA: Gigabyte GTX970 4GB G1 PSU: EVGA 650W GQ OS: Windows 10 Pro Although still working my Seagate HDD reports diagnostic errors so I wanted to replace it before it stops working. I got WD Red WDREDEFAX9 4TB to replace it but it seems that I'm not able to do it. Current disk setup is: - Samsung 850 EVO 250GB - system SSD disk with Windows 10 Pro installed and few other software - Samsung SSD PM981 512GB M.2 - SSD disk for software and gaming - Seagate 2TB Barracuda 7200 - storage only disk When all 3 disks are connected to Motherboard and PSU everything works fine. When I try to disconnect the Seagate HDD (which is NOT a system disk) I get "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" error. what I tried to do: - to replace old HDD (Seagate) with the new one (WD Red). Same cables, same SATA port. I get "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" error. - to disconnect the HDD's and leave only SSD's. Same error. - I tried all the combinations with disks, cables and SATA ports... different disks to diferent cables to different poorts. Same error. - while restarting the PC, using F11 to manually select my system disk (Samsung 850 EVO) as boot device. Same error - to change boot option priorities in BIOS. Although the BIOS clearly recognizes my system disk (SATA3_2) while trying to change boot option priorities I can only choose my M.2 SSD (Samsung PM981) and my DVD-ROM. There is no option to choose my system (Samsung 850 EVO) disk - I restored my BIOS to default settings by removing the battery. Same error. - I updated the BIOS to latest 7.50 version. Same error. - I'm running out of ideas The only way I was able to run my new HDD is to connect it while my old HDD (Seagate) is still connected. Basically, what happens is that when I disconnect my Seagate HDD (which is NOT my system disk) I can't boot my PC. |

At the end the problem was not in motherboard/BIOS
Although the windows were installed on Samsung 850 EVO, while installing, the windows created a boot/recovery partition on Seagate HDD of which I was not aware. If someone has a similar problem, it is easily solved using EasyBCD software: LINK |
