I just built a new system with an AsRock X99 Extreme4/3.1 mobo. I am trying to get WOL (Wake on Lan) to function...but I am noticing that the NIC is turning off at shutdown.

I do have the "Wake with PCIe devices" option enabled in bios. Also have the Allow this device to wake computer....and the software side on WIn 10 configured fine. I can confirm that the NIC is receiving the magic packet when OS is booted (magic packet sniffer tool). Drivers for NIC is up to date.

But the NIC still powers down at shut down. Any ideas?

Make sure deep sleep (S6) is disabled.

Are you using an Intel network driver, or what Win 10 installs?

Win 10 for some reason has caused problems for the Intel network drivers. Some features like teaming no longer work. Different builds/versions of Win 10 also cause different issues with the Intel network drivers.

I've had better luck using an older version of the Intel network driver with my ASRock X99 board, which uses the same I218V Intel network chip used on your board. The Intel 20.2 network driver may be older than the latest version (20.7) from Intel, but I've had better luck with it.

During the Intel driver installation, you'll see on the Setup Options display, check boxes for various features. I've found that unchecking the Advanced Network Services option causes more option settings to be available in the Device Manager Properties for the Intel networking chip than if that item is left checked.

Odd. I have had the opposite effect when I install the drivers. All of the advanced Intel options and settings in the Device Properties are there. (they definitely are not when u install basic drivers like the built in driver or the driver that Asrock provides.)

Driver version is 12.15.22.3  Date 11/24/2015 Intel......which i guess is quite old.

Edit: OK...so the NIC driver itself is the 12.15.22.3.....where as the Intel Network software is 20.7.67.0

Thanks.  WOL works perfectly now.

I knew it was a setting somewhere I was overlooking.

EDIT:  May have spoke too soon. WOL worked once.....now the NIC card shuts off again.

EDIT again:   So....when I run a shutdown over network script from my laptop, the desktop shuts down and the NIC remains active and WOL will work. But, shutdown the computer locally in the OS, NIC card shuts off.  Weird, must be some thing Win 10 and this hardware as my previous build had Win 10 but I had an AMD Asrock board and that NIC card did not act this way (Broadcom).
