Hey all!
Long story short, due to my water cooling system, I have my single 780ti in the second slot down on my current x58 mother board. Both the PCIE slots are x16 and it boots the GPU off the second PCIE slot just fine. Performance was identical between the top and lower PCIE slot (I tested) It is strictly for tubing aesthetics . The GPU just looks better then NOT in the top slot and offers more slack with my tubing. I will be using this GPU in my new Extreme 7+ board. Is ONLY the top slot X16? Will it boot and use the single GPU if I use the next PCIE slot down? Same performance? Thanks!! |

PCIe slot 4 what you would want to use and is PCIe x8 electrically. PCIe 3.0 x8 shouldn't bottleneck your GPU in any way so is fine to use.

Ok cool. It will detect it as the primary video device in slot 4?
Is there a single GPU out there yet that saturates a single x16 slot? Thanks again for the info! |

Yes it will detect as primary. To the best of my knowledge there are no GPUs that can saturate PCIe 3.0 x16 yet. I am pretty sure even PCIe 3.0 x8 hasn't been fully saturated yet but single card dual GPU solutions like the new Fury Duo or Titan Z may come close.
