Hi,
I have a Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac running firmware 2.10. I have 2 identical fans, one connected to FAN_CHA1 and the other to FAN_CHA2. I can adjust the spped of Fan1 based upon the Fantastic tuning in the BIOS but Fan2 always runs at full speed (and is very noisy). Why is this? Thanks |

Having fan issues here too. I email ASRock about it so we'll see what they say. Cleared CMOS was no help. Mine won't run in silent mode or properly in custom mode except for cha_fan 2. Cpu fan will run but shut off whenever it feels like it. they all run in standard or higher. Perhaps a BIOS issue. Noticed that the most recent update says "modify cpu fan behavior". I'll let you know what ASRock says.

Talked with ASRock. They got back to me within 2 hours of submitting an inquiry. Cudos to them for that. Tried the diagnosis process to no avail. RMAing the board. Might be the board itself. Tried clearing CMOS, reloading the UEFI defaults and adjusting the fans?

I have exactly same problem. ASRock support tells me that I need to use 4-pin fans...
My sotution is, I connect 4-pin CPU cooler to "Chassis fan 2" and switched so that the regulated output of the CPU temperature. And 3-pin case fans connect to "cpu fan" and "chassis fan 1" output. And now I can control all 3 fans. This solution is not perfect, but working .... |

To anyone posting in this thread about a fan speed control issue.
Please include the exact model of fan(s) you are using, so we know what we are dealing with. Other details such as the fan connector on the board it is connected to, if you use a splitter cable (one connection to the board, to two or more connectors on the other end), extension cables, low speed adapters, or anything besides the fan being directly connected to the board, is all essential information we need to diagnose your situation. All of these things can change the way a fan operates. We also need to know how you configured the fan speed control for the fan connector being used by a fan. That is, was it done in the UEFI/BIOS, or with your board's ASRock utility (AXTU, A-Tuning, F-Stream, etc), or both. PC fans do not all have the same electrical characteristics, besides a few basic things, such as being a 12V fan. Their power usage, startup voltage (voltage needed to begin spinning), maximum speed, and the fan's speed at various voltage levels, are not at all the same between different models of fans. There are no standards for these things for PC fans, and they vary enough between different models that each fan model will need a different adjustment or profile to operate as we desire. I'm not saying your board's fan speed control is or is not working as it should. But simply saying something does not work without any other information makes it very difficult if not impossible to determine if the fan speed control on a board with an updated UEFI/BIOS version is the problem. |

I don't know exact model of case fans,
but they are preinstaled fans in Silverstone SST-GD06B case with 12v 1200rpm and 3-pin connector. For CPU I use Zalman CNPS 8900 quiet cooler with 4-pin connector.
Fan speed I try to control with both UEFI/BIOS and ASRock F-Stream. On "CHA_FAN2" output I can control only CPU cooler Zalman CNPS 8900 quiet with 4-pin connector. Silverstone case fan with 3-pin connector on this output always running at maximum speed. On "CPU_FAN" and "CHA_FAN1" output I can control both , Zalman 4-pin and Silverstone case fans with 3-pin conector. To each motherboard output is directly connected only one fan without any spliter and adapter, the third case fan is connected to manual controller. Edited by Dils - 24 May 2016 at 6:41pm |

I receive answer from ASRock support:
After checking with ASRock RD, CPU Fan1 and Chassis Fan1 is provided by additional 3943S IC.
It can auto-detect the Fan which installed at the specific Fan header and recognize it is 4-Pin or 3-Pin Fan.
Therefore, the 3-pin Silverstone chassis fan install at Chassis Fan 1 is able to be set at customized mode.
If you would like to set customize mode on chassis Fan 2, we would suggest install the Fan with 4-Pin connector.

Hello,
I have the last BIOS, 1.7 (or 7.1) and I have the same issue. My Bequiet Silent Wings 2 is perfectly controled when connected to chassis fan 1, but when I connect it to chassis fan 2, it is always rotating at full speed. I used a Y cable from chassis 1 to have my 2 Silent Wings 2 correctly controled. But this is not the way it has to be. Please correct this bug with your next BIOS release. Thanks |

From Dils' post it appears to be a hardware issue, not something that can be corrected in firmware.
Since I have a 4-pin CPU fan, I have plugged this into the Chassis 2 header and plugged the second case fan into the CPU fan header, taking care to set the Chassis 2 fan to respond to CPU not motherboard temperature in UEFI (actually I have all three fans set to CPU temp). I have to say I was rather disappointed to discover this after buying the board. You need to read the spec sheet very carefully to spot the note 'CPU_FAN1 and CHA_FAN1 can auto detect if 3-pin or 4-pin fan is in use', and that it doesn't say anything about CHA_FAN2.

Hi,
I've come to this post from google after searching hours for a solution for my chassis fan always running on full speed. TLDR: downgrade BIOS to 2.1. I had that mainboard with BIOS version 7.1 and the chassis fan (3pin) connected to CHA1 was always at 1400+ rpm. The post explains that CHA2 has hardware limitations of not able to control 3pin fans. After downgrading the BIOS to 2.1, the CHA1 fan could be managed and now runs smooth at 600 rpm. Hope someone find the info useful. |
